3;l. With regard to acts <strong>of</strong> worship<br />

Amir d-Mu'mineen '<strong>Ali</strong> ibn Ahi Tilib (&) never spared any<br />

effort to explain the rulings on acts <strong>of</strong> worship to the people, because<br />

<strong>of</strong> what he enjoyed <strong>of</strong> great abundance <strong>of</strong> knowledge and<br />

understanding <strong>of</strong> Islam. What he taught the people about the rulings<br />

on acts <strong>of</strong> worship would require many huge volumes;55 therefore,<br />

we will refer to just a few <strong>of</strong> his rulings by way <strong>of</strong> example:<br />

Rulings on purification<br />

1. The urine <strong>of</strong> a baby girl needs to be washed,<br />

and the urine <strong>of</strong> a baby boy needs only to be<br />

sprinkled if he does not yet eat solid food<br />

said: 'The urine <strong>of</strong> a baby girl<br />

needs to be washed, and the urine <strong>of</strong> a baby boy needs only to be<br />

sprinkled if be does not yet eat solid food."56 The evidence for that is<br />

that when al-Husayn ibn '<strong>Ali</strong> urinated in the lap <strong>of</strong> the Prophet a),<br />

Lubibah hint al-H%ith said: "0 Messenger <strong>of</strong> Allah (&), give me<br />

your gannent and put another on." He (g) said: "The urine <strong>of</strong> the<br />

male only needs to be sprinkled, whereas the urine <strong>of</strong> the female<br />

needs to be washed."57<br />

2. The sleep <strong>of</strong> one who is sitting up,<br />

and the ruling if he breaks wind<br />

'Abdur-Razziq nanated in his Musannaf that '<strong>Ali</strong>, <strong>Ibn</strong><br />

Mas'ood and ash-Sha'bi said concerning a man who sleeps while<br />

sitting: "He does not have to perform ablution (w~doo')."~~ This<br />

may be understood as referring to very Light sleep or dozing, because
