again; it is like a debt that has been paid <strong>of</strong>f. The evidence for<br />

the view <strong>of</strong> Amir al-Mu'mineen '<strong>Ali</strong> ibn Ahi Taib (&,) is the hadith<br />

<strong>of</strong> 'Ubgdah ibn as-Shit: "We were with the Messenger <strong>of</strong> Allah (@)<br />

in a gathering, and he said: 'Whoever does any <strong>of</strong> that and is<br />

punished for it, it is an expiation for him; whoever does any <strong>of</strong> that<br />

and Allah (&) conceals it for him, then it is up to Allah. If He wills,<br />

He will pardon him and if He wills, He will punish him."'250<br />

One <strong>of</strong> the aims <strong>of</strong> Sharia is to protect honour and lineage. Not<br />

protecting them results in evils that occur because <strong>of</strong> neglect and<br />

transgression. The wars, fighting, mischief, mixing <strong>of</strong> lineage and<br />

stopping <strong>of</strong> bloodlines that happen as a result <strong>of</strong> that are well-known,<br />

because the one who commits zina is not seeking progeny; rather he<br />

is seeking immediate pleasure. If there was no chastity or protection,<br />

people would no longer be interested in marriage, immorality would<br />

become widespread, and the crime <strong>of</strong> zina would become common,<br />

along with what results from it <strong>of</strong> corruption, ill health, calamities,<br />

disasters and trials. Even if nothing else were narrated concerning<br />

this except the following verse <strong>of</strong> the Qur'an, that would be<br />

sufficient: (And come not near to unlawful sex. Verily, it is a<br />

Frihishah [i.e. anything that transgresses its limits: a great sin], and an<br />

evil way that leads one to hell unless Allah forgives him.) (Qur'an 17:<br />

3~)'~' Hence Islam brought binding laws to protect honour and<br />

lineage, and the Rightly Guided Caliphs (may Allah be pleased with<br />

them) applied these laws.<br />

3.2.3. The hadd punishment for drinking alcohol<br />

It was narrated from 'Ata' from his father that 'Mi (4)<br />

flogged the poet an-NajLhi al-Hikithi, who drank alcohol in<br />
