'<strong>Ali</strong> ibn <strong>Abi</strong> Tilib 379<br />

(g) will be carried out on you, and you will be rewarded. But if you<br />

panic and show impatience, the decree <strong>of</strong> Allah (&) will be carried<br />

out on you while you are burdened with sin (and thus you will be<br />

doomed)."237 He (&) also said: "Patience is to faith as the head is to<br />

the body; if the head-is cut <strong>of</strong>f, the body is mined." Then he raised his<br />

voice and said: "The one who has no patience has no faith."z3s He<br />

also said: "Patience is a mount that never tires."<br />

Patience occupies a well-known position in the religion <strong>of</strong><br />

Allah. Allah (&) mentions patience in many verses <strong>of</strong> the Qur'an,<br />

such as the verse in which He says: (Only those who are patient shall<br />

receive their reward in full, without reckoningb (Qur'an 39: 10). The<br />

virtues <strong>of</strong> patience are also mentioned in many hadiths. Patience is <strong>of</strong><br />

three types: Patience in obeying AUah (@), patience in refraining<br />

from disobeying Allah and patience in bearing calamity.<br />

Amir al-Mu'mineen '<strong>Ali</strong> ibn <strong>Abi</strong> T2ib was keen that his<br />

actions should be sincerely for the sake <strong>of</strong> Allah (B), in accordance<br />

with the words <strong>of</strong> Allah ($1:<br />

(Say [O Muhammad]: My Lord has commanded justice and [said]<br />

that you should face Him only [i.e. worship none but AUah and face<br />

the Qiblah, i.e. the Ka'hah at Makkah during prayers] in each and<br />

every place <strong>of</strong> worship, in prayers [and not to face other false deities<br />

and idols], and invoke Him only making your religion sincere to Him<br />

[by not joining in worship any partner with Him and with the<br />

intention that you are doing your deeds for Allah's sake only]. As He<br />

brought you [into being] in the beginning, so shall you be brought<br />

into being [on the Day <strong>of</strong> Resurrection in two groups, one as a<br />

blessed one (believers), and the other as a wretched one<br />

(disbe1ievers)l.b (Qur'an 7: 29)<br />

(Say [O Muhammad], 'I am only a man like you. It has been revealed<br />

to me that your Ilhh [God] is One Ilhh [God - i.e. Allah]. So
