~a'd'" and Asad al-Ghibah. Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Abu Mu'idh al-Isma'eeli, in<br />

his book Zawiij 'Umar ibn al-Khactrib min Umm Kulthoom bint '<strong>Ali</strong><br />

ibn <strong>Abi</strong> Tiilib (rdiya Alliihu 'anhu) Haqeeqah wa laysa Iftiri' (The<br />

Marriage <strong>of</strong> 'Umar ibn al-Kha@b to Umm Kulthoom the daughter <strong>of</strong><br />

'<strong>Ali</strong> ibn <strong>Abi</strong> Tilib is a Fact and not a Fabrication), examined the<br />

reports in the sources <strong>of</strong> both the Shia and Ah1 asSunnah, and he<br />

refuted the specious arguments that were raised concerning this<br />

blessed marriage. I have written about Umm Kulthoom, including<br />

some <strong>of</strong> her biography and her deeds at the time <strong>of</strong> 'Umar (&), in<br />

my book Fajl al-KhitLibfi Seerat Ameer al-Mu'mineen 'Umar ibn al-<br />

KhanGb: Shakh~iyahchu wu 'Asruhu.<br />

Umm Kulthoorn bint '<strong>Ali</strong> bore 'Umar a daughter named<br />

Ruqayyah and a son named Zayd. The companions <strong>of</strong> Zayd ibn 'Umar<br />

narrated that he was present when a fight broke out one night among<br />

some people fromBanu 'Adiyy ibn Ka'b. Zayd went out to them to try<br />

to reconcile between them; he received a blow that made his head<br />

bleed, and he died instantly. His mother was so aggrieved by his killing<br />

that she immediately fell unconscious and died. Umm Kulthoom and<br />

her son Zayd ibn 'Umar were buried at the same time. Al-Hasan ibn<br />

'<strong>Ali</strong> ihn <strong>Abi</strong> T%b made Abdullah ibn 'Umar ibn al-Khagih go<br />

forward to lead the funeral prayer, and he prayed behind him.'65<br />

2.6. "0 daughter <strong>of</strong> the Messenger <strong>of</strong> Allah,<br />

It was narrated that Aslam al-'Adawi said: "When allegiance<br />
