(v) A port should provide appropriate c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s for <strong>the</strong> development of <strong>the</strong> affiliated<br />

industrial z<strong>on</strong>e.<br />

(vi) It should offer <strong>the</strong> possibility to operate standard-sized c<strong>on</strong>tainers (with<br />

<strong>the</strong> excepti<strong>on</strong> of ports operating high-volume loads).<br />

(vii) All facilities necessary for standard operati<strong>on</strong> of internati<strong>on</strong>al traffic should be<br />

available.<br />

(viii) With respect to <strong>the</strong> envir<strong>on</strong>mental protecti<strong>on</strong>, ports of internati<strong>on</strong>al importance<br />

should be equipped with facilities for recepti<strong>on</strong> and disposal of waste generated by<br />

operating vessels.<br />

The waterway classificati<strong>on</strong> was adopted in 1992 by both <strong>the</strong> United Nati<strong>on</strong>s Ec<strong>on</strong>omic<br />

Commissi<strong>on</strong> for <strong>Europe</strong> and The <strong>Europe</strong>an C<strong>on</strong>ference of Ministers of Transport (now<br />

<strong>the</strong> Internati<strong>on</strong>al Transport Forum).<br />

The classificati<strong>on</strong> categories of internati<strong>on</strong>ally important waterways are presented in <strong>the</strong> picture<br />

below.<br />
