At <strong>the</strong> present state, <strong>the</strong> c<strong>on</strong>tinuous waterway (with a certain excepti<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> Střekov – Dolní<br />

Žleb secti<strong>on</strong>) ends in Chvaletice. To prol<strong>on</strong>g navigability to Pardubice, realizati<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> navigable<br />

lock Přelouč II needs to be approved but it is currently suspended due to not granted excepti<strong>on</strong><br />

from <strong>the</strong> envir<strong>on</strong>mental protecti<strong>on</strong> of species by <strong>the</strong> Ministry of Envir<strong>on</strong>ment despite <strong>the</strong><br />

c<strong>on</strong>firmative c<strong>on</strong>clusi<strong>on</strong>s of <strong>the</strong> EIA process and <strong>the</strong> legitimate territorial verdict. Realizati<strong>on</strong> of<br />

<strong>the</strong> Přelouč II navigable lock project will extend <strong>the</strong> <strong>Elbe</strong> waterway from Hamburg to Pardubice by<br />

870 km and it will provide c<strong>on</strong>necti<strong>on</strong> with o<strong>the</strong>r modes of transported via <strong>the</strong> Pardubice port.<br />

Improvement of navigati<strong>on</strong> c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> Czech part of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Elbe</strong> river would significantly<br />

improve positi<strong>on</strong> of waterway transport within <strong>the</strong> transport market. Possibility to choose from<br />

three transport modes for logistics of chemical materials and products would fur<strong>the</strong>rmore<br />

streng<strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong> positi<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> Czech chemical industry in <strong>the</strong> world market. Beside <strong>the</strong><br />

ec<strong>on</strong>omic aspects, polluti<strong>on</strong> of harmful carb<strong>on</strong> dioxide and noise would be decreased.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> future, <strong>the</strong> D-O-E corridor is supposed to be <strong>on</strong>e of <strong>the</strong> Czech major waterways within <strong>the</strong><br />

trans-<strong>Europe</strong>an waterway network. Realizati<strong>on</strong> of this project presents significant all-<strong>Europe</strong>an<br />

importance (shortening <strong>the</strong> route from Baltic ports to <strong>the</strong> Danube and fur<strong>the</strong>r to <strong>the</strong> Black Sea).<br />

Lately, <strong>the</strong> importance of <strong>the</strong> D-O-E corridor is increasing in following aspects:<br />

- <strong>the</strong> trans-<strong>Europe</strong>an traffic route c<strong>on</strong>necting <strong>the</strong> <strong>Europe</strong>an network of waterways will<br />

provide <strong>the</strong> CR with a quality access to seas and sea ports and will enable c<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong> of<br />

multimodal logistic centers and industrial z<strong>on</strong>es,<br />

- ec<strong>on</strong>omic development al<strong>on</strong>g <strong>the</strong> D-O-E corridor (urbanizati<strong>on</strong>, agriculture, sports,<br />

tourism, electric energy source and moderator, protecti<strong>on</strong> from floods, o<strong>the</strong>r water utilizati<strong>on</strong>,<br />

territorial system of ecologic stability)<br />

- anti-flood acti<strong>on</strong>s and water management with growing importance in <strong>the</strong> perspective of<br />

recent destructive floods<br />

- energetic aspects (possibility to cumulate redundant energy)<br />

- <strong>Europe</strong>an investments funded by resources for major infrastructure of essential <strong>Europe</strong>an<br />

importance.<br />

By improving navigability <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Elbe</strong> river, <strong>the</strong> transport capacity to North Sea ports can<br />

be gained in coming years, which will reach 8,5 milli<strong>on</strong> t<strong>on</strong>s/year and which will have<br />

essential impact <strong>on</strong> future predicted capacity deficits of o<strong>the</strong>r modes of transport. O<strong>the</strong>r<br />

major importance of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Elbe</strong> waterway is in transportati<strong>on</strong> of strategic commodities, such<br />

as liquefied natural gas (LNG), oil, coal and hydrocarb<strong>on</strong> emulsi<strong>on</strong>s.<br />

A feasibility study for “Improvement of C<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s for <strong>the</strong> <strong>River</strong> Transport in <strong>Central</strong> <strong>Europe</strong> (mainly <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Elbe</strong><br />

<strong>River</strong>)“ realized within <strong>the</strong> ChemLog project 190
