2.6 IMPORTANT CHEMICAL INDUSTRY COMPANIES AND THEIR LINK TO<br />
WATERWAYS<br />
This chapter describes <strong>the</strong> locati<strong>on</strong> of important chemical companies al<strong>on</strong>g <strong>the</strong> corridor of<br />
<strong>the</strong> <strong>Elbe</strong> river and <strong>the</strong> Danube river and <strong>the</strong> future corridor of <strong>the</strong> planned Danube-<strong>Elbe</strong>-Oder<br />
channel. Obviously, <strong>the</strong> most important chemical factories, particularly in <strong>the</strong> field of heavy<br />
chemical industry, are located al<strong>on</strong>g navigable (or at least navigati<strong>on</strong> enabling) waterways. This is<br />
due to high water c<strong>on</strong>sumpti<strong>on</strong> during <strong>the</strong> producti<strong>on</strong> of chemicals.<br />
Because of <strong>the</strong> locati<strong>on</strong>, waterway transportati<strong>on</strong> is evidently <strong>the</strong> most suitable mode of<br />
transport for supply and for distributi<strong>on</strong> of products.<br />
Waterway transport is desirable especially at times when road and railway network are<br />
overloaded and often unreliability, fur<strong>the</strong>rmore when c<strong>on</strong>sidering <strong>the</strong> ec<strong>on</strong>omic and ecological<br />
aspects.<br />
A feasibility study for “Improvement of C<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s for <strong>the</strong> <strong>River</strong> Transport in <strong>Central</strong> <strong>Europe</strong> (mainly <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Elbe</strong><br />
<strong>River</strong>)“ realized within <strong>the</strong> ChemLog project 72
