The North – South corridor includes Belgium, France and part of the Netherlands, the East –
West corridor includes Poland, the CR and the north and east Germany, the Rhein corridor covers
the Netherlands, France, Switzerland, Luxemburg and part of Belgium, the South-East corridor
includes part of Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria.
The study points out the great importance of the Rhein river and its tributaries caused by the
quality and efficiency of waterways and ports. The study indicates that 85 % of the total volume of
cargo transported by inland waterways of the EU 25, Bulgaria and Romania (in that time non-
member countries) is realized in the EU 15.
One of the contributions to the inland waterway navigation is undoubtedly implementation of the
River Information Services (RIS) intended to enhance efficiency and support the inland navigation
by integrating information services for all subjects involved in water transport. This system is
included in the European Parliament and Council regulation 2005/44/ES from 7 th September 2005
on harmonization of information services of inland waterways within the Community. The basic
objectives of the RIS are:
