The North – South corridor includes Belgium, France and part of <strong>the</strong> Ne<strong>the</strong>rlands, <strong>the</strong> East –<br />

West corridor includes Poland, <strong>the</strong> CR and <strong>the</strong> north and east Germany, <strong>the</strong> Rhein corridor covers<br />

<strong>the</strong> Ne<strong>the</strong>rlands, France, Switzerland, Luxemburg and part of Belgium, <strong>the</strong> South-East corridor<br />

includes part of Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria.<br />

The study points out <strong>the</strong> great importance of <strong>the</strong> Rhein river and its tributaries caused by <strong>the</strong><br />

quality and efficiency of waterways and ports. The study indicates that 85 % of <strong>the</strong> total volume of<br />

cargo transported by inland waterways of <strong>the</strong> EU 25, Bulgaria and Romania (in that time n<strong>on</strong>-<br />

member countries) is realized in <strong>the</strong> EU 15.<br />

One of <strong>the</strong> c<strong>on</strong>tributi<strong>on</strong>s to <strong>the</strong> inland waterway navigati<strong>on</strong> is undoubtedly implementati<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>River</strong> Informati<strong>on</strong> Services (RIS) intended to enhance efficiency and support <strong>the</strong> inland navigati<strong>on</strong><br />

by integrating informati<strong>on</strong> services for all subjects involved in water transport. This system is<br />

included in <strong>the</strong> <strong>Europe</strong>an Parliament and Council regulati<strong>on</strong> 2005/44/ES from 7 th September 2005<br />

<strong>on</strong> harm<strong>on</strong>izati<strong>on</strong> of informati<strong>on</strong> services of inland waterways within <strong>the</strong> Community. The basic<br />

objectives of <strong>the</strong> RIS are:<br />

A feasibility study for “Improvement of C<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s for <strong>the</strong> <strong>River</strong> Transport in <strong>Central</strong> <strong>Europe</strong> (mainly <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Elbe</strong><br />

<strong>River</strong>)“ realized within <strong>the</strong> ChemLog project 174
