<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Twentieth Century<br />

•"• frican American and Jewish American communities have long sought to<br />

organize for <strong>the</strong>ir own advancement through a variety of <strong>in</strong>stitutions, from<br />

: mass to elite, from nationalist to <strong>in</strong>tegrationist, from conservative to radical.<br />

Dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> middle-twentieth century agencies advocat<strong>in</strong>g liberalism, coalition<br />

build<strong>in</strong>g, and <strong>in</strong>tegration <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> political, economic, and social ma<strong>in</strong>stream<br />

have been <strong>the</strong> most prom<strong>in</strong>ent. Exam<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> relationships between <strong>the</strong>se organizations<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Black and Jewish communities, <strong>the</strong>refore, offers a profitable<br />

approach to Black-Jewish relations dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> period of <strong>the</strong> modern civil rights<br />

movement. Such a study avoids <strong>the</strong> dangers of generaliz<strong>in</strong>g from <strong>the</strong> actions of a<br />

few (<strong>the</strong> "but Goodman and Schwerner were Jewish" argument) and has <strong>the</strong> added<br />

advantage of allow<strong>in</strong>g us to trace developments over time, as organizational decisions<br />

and tactics changed. Budgets and staff allocation reveal <strong>the</strong> priorities of<br />

<strong>the</strong>se groups, and are thus <strong>in</strong>valuable <strong>in</strong> understand<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> extent to which Black-<br />

Jewish collaboration went beyond rhetoric or good <strong>in</strong>tentions. Fur<strong>the</strong>rmore, <strong>the</strong>se<br />

agencies may <strong>in</strong> fact be <strong>the</strong> clearest representation of <strong>the</strong>ir communities that can<br />

be identified. Organizations that were economically supported by <strong>the</strong>ir community<br />

and claimed to speak for it constantly monitored <strong>the</strong>ir community's feel<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

because mov<strong>in</strong>g too far ahead or beh<strong>in</strong>d group sentiment spelled f<strong>in</strong>ancial and<br />

political disaster. Trac<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> positions and priorities of successful ethnic organizations<br />

not only reveals <strong>the</strong> level of commitment <strong>the</strong> organized community felt<br />

toward civil rights questions, but almost as reliably also uncovers broader community<br />

views.<br />

Most prom<strong>in</strong>ent among <strong>the</strong> African American organizations <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> early twentieth<br />

century were <strong>the</strong> National Association for <strong>the</strong> Advancement of Colored<br />

People (NAACP), National Urban League (NUL), and National Association of<br />
