55. When Jewish neoconservative Allan Bloom exalted Plato so as to curse Black<br />

music as degenerate, he acutely identified (to <strong>the</strong> applause of many formerly socialist<br />

Jewish readers) both <strong>the</strong> cont<strong>in</strong>u<strong>in</strong>g claims upon <strong>West</strong>ern values and <strong>the</strong> curious<br />

hatred of mass culture which Jews and Blacks had done so much to create. Bloom had<br />

of course never been on <strong>the</strong> Left, but he found his most important sponsor (and author<br />

of <strong>the</strong> book's Forward) <strong>in</strong> manque Marxist Saul Bellow, who, like neoconservative wizard<br />

Irv<strong>in</strong>g Kristol (fa<strong>the</strong>r of William Kristol, Dan Quayle's aide-de-camp and sharp-<br />

shooter on Jewish questions) was a Trotskyist of earlier days. See Allan Bloom, The<br />

Clos<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> American M<strong>in</strong>d (New York, 1987). Dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> early 1 990s, Bellow tended<br />

to withdraw from provocative (and outrageously racist) statements made earlier <strong>in</strong><br />

support of <strong>the</strong> book; yet he rema<strong>in</strong>ed a wea<strong>the</strong>rvane <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Jewish left-turned-right.<br />

Prom<strong>in</strong>ent SDUSA <strong>in</strong>tellectuals, anxiously search<strong>in</strong>g for an issue after <strong>the</strong> Cold War,<br />

<strong>in</strong>evitably found it <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> presumably baneful effects of multiculturalism <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> American university. The Partisan Review, a favorite vehicle for <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>evitable<br />

denunciations perhaps even more than Commentary or <strong>the</strong> New Leader, thus ended its<br />

own long journey from extreme Left to extreme Right of an overwhelm<strong>in</strong>gly Jewish<br />

constituency.<br />
