lem—over and over and over aga<strong>in</strong>—I mean <strong>the</strong>re were a lot of jokes flashed on<br />

<strong>the</strong> screen, and lots of precious TV time was given over to Donahue's long litany,<br />

while <strong>the</strong> audience tittered and giggled its way through this open<strong>in</strong>g volley. It<br />

was significant, I th<strong>in</strong>k, this titter<strong>in</strong>g: after each joke, <strong>the</strong> cameras focused <strong>in</strong>tently<br />

as a dentist's drill upon <strong>the</strong> stunned-rabbit faces of <strong>the</strong> audience, an audience<br />

caught <strong>in</strong> this not-quite-sure-how-to-respond mode that implicated <strong>the</strong>m as <strong>the</strong>y<br />

struggled to be good sports while be<strong>in</strong>g broadcast live to millions of people. It<br />

was a marvelously assimilative moment, like children try<strong>in</strong>g to decide how to be<br />

seen at <strong>the</strong>ir best. Smile? Frown? Which is <strong>the</strong> posture of belong<strong>in</strong>g? So <strong>the</strong>y tittered.<br />

Nervously.<br />

There is a real risk of destructive impact caught <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> power of jokes that<br />

make fun of <strong>the</strong> supposed characteristics of historically oppressed or shunned people.<br />

Of course all humor depends on context, but, if it is possible to speak generally,<br />

1 th<strong>in</strong>k that such jokes too frequently are <strong>the</strong> enactment of a k<strong>in</strong>d of "mark<strong>in</strong>g"<br />

process, <strong>in</strong> which communities are described, k<strong>in</strong>ship delimited, <strong>the</strong> enemy<br />

imag<strong>in</strong>ed.<br />

The rest of <strong>the</strong> Phil Donahue show on Jewish American Pr<strong>in</strong>cesses was a<br />

panoply of squirmy ways of deal<strong>in</strong>g with be<strong>in</strong>g marked. Donahue's guests <strong>in</strong>cluded<br />

not only a Real Live Jewish Pr<strong>in</strong>cess, but a Black American Pr<strong>in</strong>cess, an Italian<br />

American Pr<strong>in</strong>cess, and a WASP Pr<strong>in</strong>cess as well. While <strong>the</strong>y were all will<strong>in</strong>g to<br />

be called pr<strong>in</strong>cesses of a certa<strong>in</strong> flavor, <strong>the</strong>y all denied that <strong>the</strong>y were <strong>the</strong> bad k<strong>in</strong>d<br />

of pr<strong>in</strong>cess. They negotiated this good pr<strong>in</strong>cess/evil witch divide by at least four<br />

different maneuvers:<br />

first, <strong>the</strong>re was <strong>the</strong> "role model" response: "Yeah well I'm proud to be pushy,<br />

and I've made it <strong>in</strong>to a positive attribute, look at how creative I am with <strong>the</strong><br />

lemons life has handed me. Doesn't bo<strong>the</strong>r me a bit" (even though an unfortunate<br />

cost of this survival mechanism would seem to be a ra<strong>the</strong>r defensive, cynical<br />

edge).<br />

Second, <strong>the</strong>re was <strong>the</strong> "But I really am a pr<strong>in</strong>cess!" response, along with an<br />

attempt to remove <strong>the</strong> sarcasm from <strong>the</strong> statement and be taken as literal, real.<br />

The Real WASP Pr<strong>in</strong>cess proclaimed herself as <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>heritor of society's privilege<br />

and all <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r ethnic pr<strong>in</strong>cesses as mere wanna-be imitations of herself; <strong>the</strong><br />

Black pr<strong>in</strong>cess claimed to have been <strong>the</strong> real pr<strong>in</strong>cess of a considerably smaller if<br />

warmer realm, <strong>in</strong> hav<strong>in</strong>g been <strong>the</strong> apple of her protective family's eye; and <strong>the</strong><br />

Italian American Pr<strong>in</strong>cess claimed that her real name was "pr<strong>in</strong>cess," at least that's<br />

what daddy always said.<br />

Third, <strong>the</strong>re was <strong>the</strong> move to concede that, although some women may be like<br />

that awful th<strong>in</strong>g at <strong>the</strong> butt of all those jokes, "all Jewish women are not JAPs."<br />

There was, <strong>in</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r words, a concession of <strong>the</strong> category as validly descriptive, and<br />

<strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong> attempt to exclude oneself from it. This is a powerfully defeatist move<br />

because it concedes <strong>the</strong> category as given, and <strong>the</strong>reby allows <strong>the</strong> stereotype legitimacy.<br />

The response to racist label<strong>in</strong>g is thus locked <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> logic of merely
