JDC<strong>on</strong>sult: An example <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> immersi<strong>on</strong> learning<br />

JDC<strong>on</strong>sult is a novel approach to hands-<strong>on</strong> learning in a virtual envir<strong>on</strong>ment. Our objective was to design a<br />

simulati<strong>on</strong> that provides veterinarians <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> opportunity to assess and advise a variety <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> producers with different<br />

infecti<strong>on</strong> rates, business goals, and management styles. Using pilot funding from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> University <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Wisc<strong>on</strong>sin<br />

Department <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Informati<strong>on</strong>al Technology, and additi<strong>on</strong>al funding from JDIP, we created a game where learners<br />

take <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> role <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> a new veterinarian in a nati<strong>on</strong>al c<strong>on</strong>sulting practice. As such, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> learner visits different<br />

farms across <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> country. The game was designed based <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Best Test Special Report paper published by<br />

M.T.Collins, et al. in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> December 15, 2006 issue <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> JAVMA. Learners look around <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> farm, get informati<strong>on</strong><br />

from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> producer and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>n make recommendati<strong>on</strong>s regarding management changes, testing, and what acti<strong>on</strong>s<br />

to take based <strong>on</strong> testing. The owner <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> practice gives immediate pers<strong>on</strong>alized feedback to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> learner<br />

and provides expert modeling. Use <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> animated avatars provides a more realistic experience and adds to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

gaming quality. By playing this game, learners visit different types <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> operati<strong>on</strong>s, are exposed to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> myriad <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

issues affecting c<strong>on</strong>trol <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Johne’s disease, and get first hand experience at advising producers. We will dem<strong>on</strong>strate<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> features <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> game, share <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> technical aspects and c<strong>on</strong>siderati<strong>on</strong>s encountered in developing<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> game, explain <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> iterative nature <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> development process, and discuss <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> pedagogical basis underlying<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> design <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> game. We will c<strong>on</strong>clude with a discussi<strong>on</strong> with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> audience <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> potential uses and applicati<strong>on</strong>s<br />

for this educati<strong>on</strong>al game.<br />
