The statement provides:<br />

• A standardised animal health declarati<strong>on</strong> form that would allow movement <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> sheep<br />

across state borders.<br />

• Informati<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> health status <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r to minimise paperwork.<br />

• A tool for promoting and managing farm biosecurity.<br />

THE NATIONAL SHEEP HEALTH STATEMENT<br />

Industry organisati<strong>on</strong>s are very supportive <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> move away from regulatory c<strong>on</strong>trol and an<br />

increased emphasis <strong>on</strong> farm biosecurity. The Statement is a readily accessible tool to assist<br />

producers manage <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir risk <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> inadvertently sourcing sheep with OJD and also improves<br />

c<strong>on</strong>sistency and easier movement between states.<br />

There are five secti<strong>on</strong>s to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Nati<strong>on</strong>al Sheep Health Statement.<br />

Secti<strong>on</strong> 1 - C<strong>on</strong>signment informati<strong>on</strong>: C<strong>on</strong>firms <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> origin <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> sheep and identificati<strong>on</strong><br />

for traceability purposes.<br />

Secti<strong>on</strong> 2 - ABC score: A key feature <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Nati<strong>on</strong>al Sheep Health Statement is a<br />

producer’s declarati<strong>on</strong> about <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> ABC score <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> sheep in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>signment that<br />

indicates <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> level <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> risk <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> ovine Johne’s disease.<br />

Secti<strong>on</strong> 3 and Secti<strong>on</strong> 4 – Footrot and o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r health informati<strong>on</strong>: Endemic diseases which<br />

had previously required separate state based declarati<strong>on</strong> forms.<br />

Secti<strong>on</strong> 5 – Declarati<strong>on</strong>: Although using <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Statement is voluntary in most states, it is a<br />

legal declarati<strong>on</strong> under <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> stock diseases legislati<strong>on</strong> and producers may be prosecuted<br />

for false declarati<strong>on</strong>s. The statement is not valid unless it is signed.<br />

How do producers work out <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir ABC score?<br />

Under <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> ABC Scheme, a sheep producer can claim credit points for his or her sheep under<br />

four Categories:<br />

A. Area and flock <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> origin - The known ovine Johne's disease status <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> flock or <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

Prevalence Area from which <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> sheep originated. (Refer to Figure 1)<br />

B. Testing history, including negative flock tests for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Sheep Market Assurance<br />

Program, as well as negative abattoir m<strong>on</strong>itoring.<br />

C. Vaccinati<strong>on</strong> history and whe<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> sheep are vaccinated <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>mselves, as well as<br />

whe<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y come from a fully vaccinated flock and are <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> progeny <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> vaccinated<br />

sheep. The use <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Gudair vaccine is encouraged in all prevalence areas.<br />

Vaccinated sheep are eligible for ABC points for vaccinati<strong>on</strong> if <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y are identified by a<br />

standard NLIS (Sheep) ear tag incorporating a "V" identifier.<br />

D. Individual veterinary risk assessment for a c<strong>on</strong>signment <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> sheep undertaken by an<br />

Approved Veterinarian.<br />
