On-Farm Disease Reducti<strong>on</strong> Practices<br />

Grazing management and biosecurity planning are also tools <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> choice for c<strong>on</strong>trolling disease<br />

<strong>on</strong>-farm and reducing <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> risk <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> spreading infecti<strong>on</strong>. Producers are encouraged to develop<br />

property disease management plans that<br />

• most importantly, determine <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> level <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> risk associated with sheep prior to purchase<br />

and introducti<strong>on</strong> by requesting a Nati<strong>on</strong>al Sheep Health Statement.<br />

• use grazing management to reduce bacterial load <strong>on</strong> c<strong>on</strong>taminated pastures and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

development <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> ‘safe’ pastures (spelled or grazed with n<strong>on</strong> susceptible stock for 12<br />

m<strong>on</strong>ths),<br />

• implement biosecurity activities such as double fencing, and<br />

• test purchased rams or o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r valuable individual animals by faecal culture before <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y<br />

are released into <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> flock.<br />

Abattoir M<strong>on</strong>itoring<br />

Abattoir m<strong>on</strong>itoring involves examinati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> intestines during <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> normal meat inspecti<strong>on</strong><br />

process at several key sheep abattoirs. It generates data which is used to estimate flock<br />

prevalence in geographic regi<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Australia and to provide feedback to individual<br />

producers <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> occurrence <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> OJD in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir sheep. This feedback enables <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>m improve<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir Johne’s disease c<strong>on</strong>trol or, where m<strong>on</strong>itoring is negative, to declare additi<strong>on</strong>al ABC<br />

credits under <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> testing secti<strong>on</strong> (C) <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Nati<strong>on</strong>al Sheep Health Statement.<br />
