oxygen from fine bubble aeration than the other technologies (Table 3.10). This being<br />

said, the data for specific aeration dem<strong>and</strong> appear to demonstrate that, for this trial:<br />

(a) <strong>The</strong> Mitsubishi Rayon system had a significantly higher specific aeration<br />

dem<strong>and</strong> with respect to membrane aeration (SAD m <strong>and</strong> SAD p), reflecting the<br />

somewhat lower permeability <strong>of</strong> the membrane material.<br />

(b) <strong>The</strong>re was little difference in the figures for the total specific aeration dem<strong>and</strong><br />

(TSAD p) <strong>of</strong> all those technologies operating without denitrification under the<br />

most optimum conditions, the figures ranging from 51 to 62.<br />

<strong>The</strong> latter point is interesting in that it suggests one <strong>of</strong> two things: (a) that the air<br />

from fine bubble aeration somehow ameliorated membrane fouling, or (b) that the<br />

coarse bubble aeration contributed substantially to the DO.<br />

<strong>The</strong> permeability data also provides interesting information on system operation<br />

<strong>and</strong> maintenance. <strong>The</strong> Zenon system was the only one operated with regular (three<br />

times a week) maintenance cleans by backpulsing with chlorine (250 ppm) or citric
