Norit X-Flow is a major supplier of MT and capillary tube (CT) membrane modules,
the latter thus far being dedicated to potable water filtration. The tubular membrane
is supported by a mechanically robust substrate (Fig. 4.31) by a two-fold polyester
backing. The membrane material itself is either PES for the CT configuration,
3 mm external diameter, or PVDF for the MT type used for sMBR technologies.
These membranes comprise type F4385, 5.2 mm i.d., and type F5385, 8 mm i.d., each
having a pore size of 0.03 m. The PVDF MT modules are supplied as both PVC (38PR)
or glass fibre reinforced (38GR) shells. At 3 m in length, the respective total membrane
area and number of lumens is 30 m 2 from 620 lumens (for the 5.2 mm i.d.) or ~27 m 2
from 365 lumen (8 mm i.d.).
Thus far, only the MT configuration (Fig. 4.32) has found use in sMBRs. The most
established of these are based on pumped, horizontally mounted crossflow modules
(Fig. 4.33a), with some of the more recent plants fitted with vertically mounted
