at 10 000–12 000 mg/L. The membrane filtration stage employs immersed 0.05 m
reinforced PES membranes. Membranes are supplied in two module configurations,
horizontally mounted and in single manifolds, which are open at one end and connected
to a manifold for permeate extraction under vacuum. The modules have integral
aerators, with air-scour nozzles placed within the fibre bundles (Fig. 4.30). The
company is also incorporating the Dual Stage MBR in its new Integrated Reuse
System, together with ITT RO, Ozone and UV technology.
4.4 Sidestream MBR technologies
There are a number of MT membrane module suppliers providing standard size
cylindrical modules, generally 100 or 200 mm in diameter, which are then employed
by sidestream MBR (sMBR) process suppliers in their proprietary processes. Details
of two-membrane module product suppliers are given below. The proprietary MBR
technologies of one established European MT MBR process supplier are described in
Section 4.5.3.
Berghof is a German supplier who provide two MT UF 3 m-long membrane module
products: HyPerm-AE and HyperFlux, the main difference being the module and
membrane tube diameters. The HyPerm-AE is a 225 mm diameter module fitted with
11.5 mm diameter tubes, 112 in all, providing a total membrane area of 11.8 m 2 , in
PVC-C housing. The membrane material is either 250 kD PVDF or PES, offered with a
range of selectivities between 20 and 150 kDa, both materials being on a PP substrate
support. The HyperFlux is a standard 8 (200 mm) diameter module fitted with 8 or
10 mm diameter tubes, thereby respectively providing a total membrane area of 27.2
or 21.2 m 2 from 365 or 224 membrane tubes, in glass–fibre reinforced plastic (GRP)
housing. The membranes in this case are either of 250 kDa PVDF or 150 kDa PES. For
both products, the membrane element is replaceable within the GRP housing.
