ITT Industries has a $8.0 billion turnover and offers a number of product lines relating
to water and wastewater treatment. The company acquired PCI Membranes
from Thames Water (now part of RWE) and WET, a supplier of RO systems in 2002
as well as Wedeco Disinfection in 2005. The new ITT Industries’ Dual Stage MBR
systems, launched in 2005, take advantage of synergies between two of the company’s
subsidiaries: Sanitaire and Aquious-PCI Membrane Systems. Sanitaire is the
world’s leading supplier of aeration systems for wastewater treatment and also
supplies complete wastewater systems based on the Sanitaire ABJ sequencing batch
reactor (SBR). Aquious, a unit of ITT Advanced Water Treatment, is a relatively new
brand that envelopes ITT Industries’ existing membrane filtration products and
technology. As well as retaining the manufacturing capability for tubular membranes
provided by PCI Membranes, Aquious supplies spiral-wound or HF membranes
for clean feed streams, and ceramic membranes for applications requiring
high chemical compatibility and thermal resistance.
The new Dual Stage MBR technology is targeted both at municipal and industrial
wastewater applications, particularly in food and beverage production, chemical
and pharmaceutical manufacturing, pulp and paper processing, metal finishing and
steel production. As with many other HF MBRs, biological treatment is separated
from the membrane filtration stage to allow independent control of retention time
and aeration. The biological stage employs high-efficiency Sanitaire ® diffused aeration
technology based on Gold Series diffusers. MLSS levels can be maintained
