ington Corridor <strong>and</strong> in Chicago. New York has<br />
the greatest proportion <strong>of</strong> commuters who use<br />
transit (see figure 8-3).<br />
In the rest <strong>of</strong> the country, San Francisco is the<br />
only major metropolitan area where transit share<br />
approaches 10 percent. In Minneapolis <strong>and</strong> Los<br />
Angeles the share is 5 percent <strong>and</strong> in Dallas only<br />
2 percent. The fact that transit shares are low in<br />
rapidly growing metropolitan areas <strong>of</strong> the South<br />
<strong>and</strong> West reinforces the countrywide shift away<br />
from transit. Many people in such southern <strong>and</strong><br />
western cities as Dallas <strong>and</strong> Los Angeles ride in
