the neighbourhood 100.1 FM station (it can be
heard on radio from a distance of about to 3
kilometres). The 6 hours of transmission are also
recorded and during the week we carry out work
editing and assembling to transform part of these
productions into other formats (microprogramme,
podcast, etc.), which are then
broadcast on various platforms (AM and FM
radio, and several internet platforms). The aim is
for these productions to be able to reach the
“common man” and cover various geographical
regions and diverse publics. Later, we try to obtain
records the effects on listeners, bringing this back
into the mechanism again. This record is obtained
by recording telephone calls from listeners to the
re-transmission radio station, or to our
organisation’s base, together with live Skype
listener communications. We also have records of
the emails sent to patients and messages from the
web page. This to-and-fro traffic opens
possibilities for processes of mutual transformation
in the areas of project impact.
Four years ago La Colifata also started a television
project. It took 12 years for this to come about.
We had always said no. There is a risk of
overexposure on a platform like TV and,
furthermore, discussion of the problem of
stigmatisation requires raising that issue connected
to market logics and the problematics of the public
and the private. From the market point of view,
the other is always a consumer. If the formula
were to present the public with scenes of the
private, treating it as spectacle, there would on
the other side be a consumer probably attracted
to the obscenity of an unveiled image, with the
absence of metaphor, someone who voyeuristically
consumes “strange things”, like someone going to
a zoo. I am not referring here to anything we do
not know, in light of the current abundance of
Talk Shows and Reality Television. Our aim is to
prevent this and at the same time to encourage
processes connected to the construction of
citizenship and healthy spaces.
A space was created where the community can
also construct La Colifata TV in the same way as
the radio station.
La Colifata not only reaches the community
directly, that is through communicative content
that later accesses platforms for release into social
circulation, but we also make what we call direct
interventions in the community: we do “open
radio” and also carry out an action programme
called La Colifata Solidaria.
Open radio literally takes the radio from
psychiatry; that web-making diffusion machine -
which we call the group radiophonic mechanism
or plastic-sound installation – leaving psychiatry
and reaching the villages, towns and communities
we are invited into. This takes place because La
Colifata’s re-transmissions have for years been
supported by media airing these microprogrammes
in various regions of the country.
The idea is to meet the community “face to face”,
and as “preconceptions” with the perception of
the moment of encounter. An encounter with
something unpredicted, an encounter as an event:
one of the coordinator’s tasks is to create conditions
for something to happen, for the unexpected,
