The sun shines, but it’s not so simple.
Through Siberian summer
the mammoth sleeps,
its huge tusks
locked in ice.
You are bereft, but you are grateful.
You live your life without elaboration,
build a cabin
on the frozen earth,
do your best with children.
You have survived : tough, inconsolable.
Calm only puzzles.
You wait
for the next loss, wondering
how to be content with happiness.
The ice thins, but it’s not so simple.
You are the hollowed stone
after the glacier passes on,
your scars
bleached striae in the sun.

El sol brilla, pero no es tan simple.
A través del verano siberiano
el mamut duerme,
sus enormes colmillos
atrapados en el hielo.
Estás desprovisto, pero agradecido.
Vives tu vida sin elaboración,
construyes una cabaña
en la tierra congelada,
haces lo mejor con los niños.
Has sobrevivido: duro, inconsolable.
La calma sólo confunde.
Esperas
la siguiente pérdida, preguntándote
cómo contentarse con la felicidad.
El hielo se adelgaza, pero no es tan simple.
Eres la piedra horadada
después de que pasa el glaciar,
tus cicatrices
estrías blanqueadas al sol.
