4. Preattentive processing may be operatively defined as a processing without
attention of a stimulus that influences subsequent attentional proccessing of
the same stimulus.
B) THEORETICAL CONCLUSIONS
5. Our results showed that preattentive processing of visual patterns, grouped
by similarity in luminance influences their subsequent identification.
6. The temporal course of preattentive processing is a critical factor that
modulates performance in subsequent tasks requiring selective attention.
7. Preattentive processing can influences selective attention not only in a
facilitatory way but also in an inhibitory one, depending on the interaction of
activation/inhibition processes. The distractor inhibition hypothesis may be a
coherent explanatory model for our data.
8. Just the intention for attending is not enough to influence behaviour. It is
necessary to have appropriate temporal conditions to get that intention for
attending lead to an effective attentional proccesing influencing current
activity.
9. Results obtained with identification and visual search tasks have been
notably divergent. New experimental designs are necessary to study which
factors are responsible for this difference.
10. Although certain uses of the term "preattentive" should be abandoned, the
concept has not lost its usefulness. A new account suggests that the same
brain areas can participate not only in the feed-forward generation of
preattentive representations but also in the subsequent attentional
processing by means of a reentrant activation.
