Il primo libro di Erri De Luca è
datato 1989: si intitola Non ora,
non qui, è una rievocazione della
sua infanzia a Napoli. Prima di
pubblicarlo, nei precedenti 40
anni di vita, lo scrittore
napoletano aveva vissuto dei
mestieri più svariati, in Italia
come all'estero: operaio
qualificato, camionista,
magazziniere, muratore.
Autodidatta di diverse lingue (tra
cui lo yiddish e l'ebraico antico,
dal quale traduce alcuni testi
della Bibbia), De Luca oggi è
regolarmente tradotto in
francese, spagnolo, inglese e altre
lingue europee. Sulla traccia di
Nives, Solo andata, Il giorno
prima della felicità e Aceto,
arcobaleno tra i suoi successi
editoriali più conosciuti, il suo
ultimo libro - I pesci non
chiudono gli occhi (Feltrinelli, pp
115, euro 12) - è uscito a ottobre.

The first book that Erri De Luca
published came out in 1989.
Called, Non ora, non qui, it
evokes his childhood in Naples.
Before becoming a writer, in the
preceding 40 years of his life, De
Luca tried out many professions,
both in Italy and abroad,
varying from blue-collar worker,
truck driver, warehouse
manager, and brick layer. Having
taught himself several
languages (including Yiddish
and Hebrew – to translate texts
from the Bible), De Luca today
has been translated into French,
Spanish, English, and other
European languages. Sulla

Aceto, arcobaleno are among
his best-sellers. His latest book -
I pesci non chiudono gli occhi
(Feltrinelli, pages 115, euros 12),
just came out in October.

Altri), he also often writes about
the Alps, a teacher of life and
his great passion.

Contro
Ho sempre pensato che dobbiamo sentirci ospiti
dell’ambiente in cui viviamo. Siamo ospiti o dovremmo
esserlo su questo pianeta per lasciarlo in
buone condizioni a chi ci vivrà dopo di noi. La
montagna, più di ogni altro luogo, riesce a darti
questa sensazione, a farti sentire ospite. Certo, il
mare è il posto da cui provengo e ho avuto la fortuna,
negli anni di Napoli, di trascorrere ogni anno
tre mesi di mare a Ischia. Ci portavano a giugno
e praticamente ci abbandonavano
lasciando che ci inselvatichissimo.
Tanto mi bastavano
quei lunghi soggiorni
sull’isola che poi non ho più
avuto alcun desiderio di andarmi
a cercare le isole tropicali.
Quella libertà vissuta a
Ischia e tutto quel tempo trascorso
là sopra contenevano
tutti i tropici e tutti gli oceani.
La montagna quando è entrata
nella sua vita?
La mia prima fotografia a un
anno è su un prato di montagna.
Mio padre ha fatto l’alpino
e durante la guerra ha
combattuto nella fanteria di
montagna. E prestissimo i miei
genitori mi hanno sbattuto in
montagna. Ma è a trent’anni,
dopo tanto mare, che ho messo
le spalle alla valle. Che significa
metterle anche al passato e al futuro. Sono
diventato uno scalatore assiduo e oggi, in certe
occasioni, scalo anche a piedi nudi.
Le parole come utensili è il tema che le hanno
assegnato al Festival della Mente di Sarzana
nel settembre scorso. Oggi le parole predominanti
sono quelle dell’economia: lo spread è
entrato nei titoli di testa di tutti i telegiornali.
Richiami perentori alla realtà che non scaldano
certo i cuori..
Viviamo una sorta di idolatria dell’economia. Negli
ultimi anni abbiamo avuto come capo del governo
l’uomo più ricco del Paese, incarico oggi appannaggio
di un professore di economia e come
presidente della Repubblica un ex governatore
della Banca d’Italia. Penso che gli uomini dell’economia
non sappiano governare tutti gli aspetti
della realtà, mi paiono a volte più imbonitori che
uomini di governo. E ho l’impressione che l’economia
non sia una scienza ma un oroscopo.
Sarà anche un oroscopo, ma quando lo spread
schizza sopra i 500 punti si preannunciano
tempi duri per tutti.

I have always felt that we are guests in each
environment in which we live. We are guests, or at
least we should feel like guests on this planet. We
should leave it in good condition for those who
come after us.
The Alps, more than any other place, give you this
feeling – they make you feel like a guest. Certainly
the sea is the place where I come from. And I have
been lucky enough to spend three months each year
on the sea of Ischia. They
would take us there in June,
and almost abandon us, letting
us turn into savages. Those
long stays on the island were
enough for me. I have never
had any desire to take a trip to
a tropical island.
The freedom that I experienced
in Ischia, and all the time that I
spent there, for me hold all of
the tropics and all of the
oceans.
And so when did the Alps
enter your life?
My first photograph at age one
is on a mountain meadow. My
father was in the Alpine
Brigade, and during the war he
fought in the mountain
infantry. At a tender age, my
parents dropped me into the
mountains. But when I turned
thirty, after all that sea, I turned my back on the
valleys. This meant putting them into the past and
the future. I become an Alpine climber, and today,
on occasion, I even climb barefoot.
“Words as Tools” is the theme that you were
assigned by the Festival of the Mind in Sarzana
last September. Today the words that dominate
are on the economy – the English word “spread”
is on the headlines of all the newspapers. These
demanding calls to reality certainly do not
warm hearts…
At the moment we live to worship the gods of the
economy. In recent years we have had the richest
man in the country leading our government. Today
that job is the prerogative of a professor of
economy, and as our President, we have a former
governor of the Bank of Italy.
I think that the men of the economy do not know
how to govern all the aspects of reality. They seem
more like hucksters than statesmen. And I have the
impression that economics is not a science, but a
horoscope.
