The Hour of Trebino Is Always Rung
Non solo botteghe, nella provincia genovese si trovano aziende storiche di tutti i
settori. A Uscio, a due passi da Recco, si producono ancora orologi e campane che
scandiscono le ore nel mondo
Surprisingly enough, a family-run company in the Province of Genoa, in Uscio
(near Recco), makes most of the clock tower clocks in the world. It has been doing
this for seven generations now
Fateci caso. Alzate lo sguardo agli orologi di
torri, campanili, facciate di stazioni o palazzi
della vostra città. Ma anche di quelle che
visiterete. Probabilmente sono di marca Trebino.
E’ dal 1824 che la ditta di Uscio realizza, con
tecniche sempre all’avanguardia, gli orologi e le
campane che scandiscono le ore nel mondo. Alla
quinta generazione di Trebino, oggi l’azienda
è gestita dai fratelli Giorgio e Guglielmo, che
hanno già inserito i figli e i nipoti.
Giorgio Trebino, dall’inizio della vostra attività
ad oggi, come si è evoluta la tecnologia
del conteggio del tempo?
Il primo orologio da torre della ditta risale al
1824, era in legno e fu installato nella chiesa di
San Siro di Struppa. Ma siamo passati ben presto
a quelli in ferro battuto e negli anni Sessanta a
quelli elettrici, di cui il primo andò a Genova sul
grattacielo di piazza Dante. Poi sono arrivati gli
orologi elettronici e oggi si parla di sistemi radio
sincronizzati, con il cambio automatico dell’ora
legale e dell’ora solare.
Quanti orologi avete realizzato in tutto e dove
sono?
Difficile fare un conto, sicuramente parecchie
migliaia, oggi ne produciamo in media uno al
giorno. Potremmo farne anche di più ma i comuni
sono in crisi e hanno diminuito le richieste.
I nostri orologi sono dappertutto, almeno metà
dei comuni italiani li abbiamo serviti noi, nei
paesi del nord di solito l’orologio è sul campanile
della chiesa, in quelli del sud sulla torre civica.
Sono nostri gli orologi del Quirinale e del Vaticano,
della Torre del Mangia di Siena, della
Torre delle Ore di Lucca, della Torre della Minerva
di Assisi e della Torre del Moro di Orvieto.

towns you are visiting. The clocks will almost
certainly display the Trebino trademark. Since 1824,
this company out of Uscio has been using avantgarde
techniques to make the public clocks and bells
that ring out the hour across the world. A fifth
generation family firm, today the company is run by
Trebino brothers Giorgio and Guglielmo, and the
sixth and seventh generation of family members are
already at work at the firm.
Giorgio Trebino, since the time of the founding
of your company, how has the technology of
counting the hours evolved?
The first clock tower clock made by our company
dates to 1824. It was made of wood and installed
in the thousand year old church, San Siro di
Struppa. But soon we moved on to clocks made of
wrought iron, in the 70s to electronic clocks, and
today we speak of clocks with radio synchronized
systems with an automatic change-over for
daylight savings time.
How many clocks have you made in all, and
where are they now?
It’s hard to count them…without a doubt several
thousand. Today we average one a day. We could
make even more, but towns are having financial
difficulties and requests have dropped. Our clocks
are everywhere. At least half the towns of Italy have
been served by us. In the north, in general, the clock
goes on the church tower. In the south, on the
municipal tower. Our clocks are on the
Italian “White House”, the Quirinale; at the Vatican;
on the Torre del Mangia in Siena; the Torre delle Ore
in Lucca; the Torre della Minerva in Assisi; and the
