Mica male per uno che fino agli anni ’50 faceva
ancora il meccanico.
Poi è stato ingegnere, giornalista, solo alla fine si
è arreso all’evidenza della sua vocazione: raccontare
il mondo con una macchina fotografica.
Gli scatti di Vogel sono così come li vedi. È il
mondo fermato nell’attimo di un click. Sarà per
questo che la preparazione di un singolo scatto
può durare anche ore.
«L’anno scorso è tornato nel nostro locale per un
servizio fotografico – ricorda Alessandro Cavo,
titolare dell’antica Pasticceria Marescotti, riaperta
nel 2008 dopo ventinove anni di oblio –
Ha dato un’occhiata perplessa alla luce, scuotendo
la testa: “No, così non va, vado a farmi un
giro” ha detto, prima di uscire. L’abbiamo visto
tornare solo due ore dopo».
E la mente corre a oltre trent’anni fa, quando
Vogel aveva immortalato il locale poco prima
della chiusura, riscoprendolo pressoché immutato
nella struttura e negli arredi d’epoca. Il risultato
è l’ennesima, grande storia per immagini di
questo gigante della fotografia del Novecento,
in esclusiva per i lettori di “Blue”, insieme ad alcuni
scatti tratti dal calendario 2012 Viaggio da
Genova a Viareggio.

the point where, by many, he is considered to be the
German Cartier-Bresson. Not bad for someone who
until the fifties worked as a mechanic.
Then he became an engineer, then a journalist. Only at
the end of all, did he give in to his true profession –
to describe the world using a camera. The shots Vogel
takes are what you see.
The world stops upon a click. This must be why the
preparation for a single shot takes him sometimes
several hours.
“He came back into our pasty bar last year for a
photographic endeavor,” remembers Alessandro Cavo,
owner of the ancient Pasticceria Marescotti, which
reopened in 2008 after 29 years of oblivion. “He took
a look at the light, and scowled, shaking his head, ‘No.
This isn’t going to work. I’m going to take a little
walk,’ he said, before he left. It took him two hours to
return.”
And the mind runs back thirty years, when Vogel
immortalized the pastry bar just before closing time.
You can see it now, basically unchanged in structure
and in furnishings.
The result is the nth great story told by images by this
giant of 20 th century photography, and this photo –
an exclusive – is a Christmas present to our readers at
Blue, along with some shots taken from the 2012
calendar, Voyage from Genoa to Viareggio.
