footsteps of Erika and Klaus, the children of Thomas Mann. They wrote a “counter-guide book” published in 1931

- che avrebbero lasciato definitivamente la
Germania quasi contemporaneamente al
padre Thomas (1933) - sono in giro per il mondo
e, tra un vagabondaggio e l’altro, pubblicano
una controguida -già, non è una novità- sulle
due Riviere commissionata dall’editore Piper, che
la farà illustrare - tra gli altri - anche da Matisse.
Erika e Klaus non vanno volentieri in Italia
per ovvi motivi, tuttavia si spingeranno sino a
Genova. Seguiremo, per quanto possibile, i loro
passi, ché le controguide sono sempre un piacere
a leggersi, specie se opera di scrittori di quel
calibro: profondi, quanto frivoli, a seconda dell’argomento.
Siccome l’editore chiedeva soluzioni
economiche, se possibile, a Ventimiglia -scrivono-
è d’obbligo mangiare al buffet della
stazione -che è ancora lì- «...e con nessun altro
nome di città si collega tale immagine di stazione,
frontiera, scendere, controllo dei bagagli e

Erika and Klaus do not really wish to come to Italy,
for obvious reasons [Fascism]. But all the same they
head towards Genoa. And we will follow, as much as
possible, in their footsteps, as the counter-guides
are always a pleasure to read. This is especially true
when dealing with writers of great caliber, who are
as profound as they are frivolous, depending on the
subject.
Because their editor was requesting, if possible,
“economic” (as in cheap) solutions, they write that
in Ventimiglia one must eat at the buffet at the
station (which is still there). “…and no other town’s
name brings to mind such images of train station,
border, get down, have your baggage checked along
