L’ingegner Mazzuchi è stato tra i
“finisher”. Uno dei 392 che sono
riusciti ad arrivare in fondo.
Federico ha tagliato il traguardo
alle 7,11 di sabato mattina. Spinto,
nell’ultimo tratto, dalla volontà di
accendere i riflettori su una
malattia rara, l’Lnd (la sindrome di
Lesch Nyhan, «in parole povere, un
anello mancante nel Dna – spiega
Federico - che porta chi ne è
colpito alla involontaria necessità
di farsi del male. In Italia sono
appena una ventina, non più di 200
in Europa»). E di raccogliere fondi

Soffre di Lnd suo nipote Michele,
adottato da sua sorella Paola
quando aveva tre mesi. «La storia di
questo bambino era finita su un
quotidiano. Paola e i miei nipoti
l’avevano letta; proprio da loro era
partita la proposta: siamo una bella
famiglia, perché non l’adottiamo?.
Da allora Michele è diventato il
quarto figlio. Quando nel 2010 ha
compiuto 21 anni fui invitato al
afternoon. Six days, resting where

The “Tor” took place this year for
the third time, in the first half of
September with 629 participants at
the starting line.
Federico crossed the finish line at
7:11 on Saturday morning. He
pushed through on the last leg on
pure willpower, to set the spotlight
on a rare disease. Called Lnd, the
Syndrome of Lesch Nyhan “in
layman’s terms [means] a ring is
missing on the patient’s DNA,”
explains Federico. “And this makes
him prone to involuntarily hurting
himself. In Italy there are barely 20
people who suffer from the disease,
and not more than 200 in the
whole of Europe.” Mazzuchi also
seeks funds for research. (To find

Mazzuchi’s nephew, Michele,
suffers from Lnd. But there is yet
more to the story. In Federico’s
words, “Michele was adopted by
my sister Paola and her family
when he was just three months
old. They had read about the baby
in the newspaper, and Paola’s
children made the proposal,
‘Mamma, we are a nice family,
suo compleanno: quel giorno mi
venne l’idea di aiutarlo. Nella
palestra che frequentavo proposi
una specie di scommessa ai titolari
e ad alcuni amici: “Siete disposti a
fare una donazione per la ricerca
sulla malattia di Michele, se porto a
termine un lunghissimo trekking?”
Io non avevo nessuna esperienza di
questo tipo. Mi presero per matto,
ma poi mi assecondarono.
Cominciai con il trail della
Valdigne, sempre in Val d’Aosta.
Arrivai in fondo e loro fecero la
donazione promessa, 16 mila euro,
subito “girati” all’Università di
Siena per una prima ricerca sulla
Lnd. Da allora io e i miei amici
siamo andati avanti, fra prove (mie)
e scommesse (loro), fino alla prova
impossibile del Tor. Non potevo
fermarmi: lo dovevo a Michele. La
ricerca sull’Lnd va avanti. E io, al
Tor, nel 2013, ci sarò di nuovo.
Anche perché è un’esperienza
meravigliosa, una di quelle per cui
vale la pena vivere».

“I wanted to do something. And the
idea came to me while I was
working out in the gym. Almost as
a dare, I asked the owners and a
few friends, ‘Would you be willing
to make a donation for research on
Michele’s illness if I carry out a
challenge, like doing some really
long trekking?’
“I, it must be said, did not have any
experience in anything of the sort.
Everyone thought I was crazy, but
then they backed me up. And that’s
how the challenge began. I began
on the trail of the Aosta Valley’s
Valdigne. I got to the end, and they
handed in the promised donation.
We made 16,000 euros, and
donated them to the University of
Siena for their first research on Lnd.
Since then my friends and I have
gone on. Between the trials (mine)
and the bets (theirs), I hit the final
impossible challenge of the Tor. I
couldn’t stop myself. I had to do it
for Michele. Research on Lnd also
goes on. And I will be there again
on the Tor next year. Also because,
over and beyond the intense effort,
it was a marvelous experience. One
worth living.”
