I capitali fluttuano e vanno dove è più conveniente
andare. Non prevedo alcuna catastrofe immediata,
solo una lenta assuefazione al ribasso. E un
nuovo pauperismo sullo sfondo.
Che fare per arginare questa deriva del capitalismo
globale?
Dire basta al governo maschile del mondo che
ha prodotto tanti guasti. Proverei con quello
femminile.
Per molto tempo “rapallizzazione” è stata la
parola con cui Calvino ha inchiodato la Liguria
alle sue pulsioni cementizie. Se dovesse associare
una parola alla Liguria per rappresentarla
oggi quale sceglierebbe?
Terrazze. La Liguria è fatta di terrazze e di muretti
a secco. Sia a Levante, nelle Cinque Terre che
da giovane frequentava Montale, sia nel Ponente
di Francesco Biamonti. La terrazza esprime la
fatica e l’attaccamento alla terra. Ora quelle terrazze
si staccano e scivolano via. Sono pezzi di
Liguria che finiscono in mare. Mi immagino per la
Liguria un futuro dove i giovani torneranno a fare
i muretti a secco. Impareranno a farlo per necessità,
visti i dissesti idrogeologici che hanno interessato
questa terra.
Ha studiato il greco e l’ebraico antico. Che rapporto
ha con i sacri testi?
La prima lettura delle mie giornate è un brano dell’Antico
Testamento. Quando vado all’estero mi
porto in valigia i Salmi e Davide è il mio autore
preferito.

So what should we do to keep global capitalism
from shipwreck?
Say “Enough!” to the male governments of the
world. I would try the female ones.
For years, “Rapallization” was the word which
writer Italo Calvino used to nail Ligurian overbuilding
to the wall. If you had to find another
word to associate with Liguria what would you
choose?
Terraces. Liguria is made of terraces and stone walls
built without mortar. Both in the East – in the
Cinque Terre so beloved of Nobel-Prize poet
Montale – as in the West of Francesco Biamonti. The
terraces show the intense effort involved in loving
this land. But now they crumble away, pieces of
Liguria that drop into the sea. But I dream of a
future for Liguria with youths who once again build
walls of stone. They will have to learn how, by
necessity now, seeing the hydro-geology which
affects this land.
You have studied Greek and ancient Hebrew.
How do you relate to the sacred texts?
The first thing I read before starting the day is a
piece out of the Old Testament. When I go abroad, I
carry the Psalms in my suitcase. David is my favorite
author.
