No, quando ho scritto la prima
indagine Morte a domicilio, con
quel commissario dai modi un
po’ bruschi che piaceva alle
donne anche se sembrava non
rendersene conto, pensavo fosse
un unicum. Poi è nata un’altra
storia e ancora un’altra e ora
non riesco a liberarmene. Ho già
tentato più volte di farlo morire
ma niente, non ce la faccio,
Mariani è vivo e lotta insieme a
noi.

What is happening in your new
Mariani?
In Inspector Antonio Mariani’s
twelfth investigation – which will
be in the bookshops in December,
published as always by Fratelli Frilli,
under the title, “Mariani Celtique”
– my main character will find
himself carrying out two
investigations simultaneously. One
is the official one – a Senegalese
who has been killed in the area
around Via Turati, and the other,
let’s call it “personal” one, given to
him by a fugitive.
And how are things going with
his wife, Francesca?
Everything has calmed down after
the crisis that brought them to
the verge of divorce. And with
Inspector Petri as well - who
replaced the faithful Inspector
Iachino – after a difficult start,
the relationship has been
smoothed out.
Were the books now called the
“Mariani”s – which readers
expect on an annual schedule –
born as a series?
Oh no. When I wrote my first
investigation, “Morte a domicilio”
(Death at the Domicile) – with

l’ingegnere genovese Federico
Mazzuchi, 55 anni, imprenditore,
si è ritrovato svuotato di energie e
con il quadricipite della gamba
sinistra fuori uso, solo il pensiero
di Michele gli ha dato la forza di
tirare avanti e finire il Tor des
Geants, considerato il più
massacrante trekking d’alta quota,
attraverso i sentieri e i passi della
Valle d’Aosta, sotto “i Giganti”,
ovvero il Monte Bianco, il Gran
Paradiso, il Monte Rosa, il Cervino
e il Monte Combin.
Trecentotrenta chilometri il
percorso, con 24 mila metri di
dislivello, da Courmayeur a
Courmayeur, attraverso le due
Alte Vie che si toccano a Donnas.
Una faticaccia che sembra ai
limiti delle capacità umane, tra
passaggi spesso difficili in alta
montagna («qualche punto limite
c’era – racconta Mazzuchi – con
un bel “buco” sotto i piedi»), da
percorrere nel tempo limite di 150
ore, dal via della domenica
mattina, all’arrivo entro il sabato
pomeriggio successivo. Sei giorni,
