Jewels out of a Fable
A Chiavari, in Caruggiudritu, le vetrine della gioielleria Rocca si aprono come
libri di favole con i disegni in rilievo. Nella stessa via c’è la pasticceria Copello,
una storia imprenditoriale iniziata nel 1826
In Chiavari, on Caruggiudritu (“the Straight Alleyway”), the showcases of
the jewelry shop, Gioielleria Rocca, open like a book of fairy tales. On the
same street is the pastry shop, Pasticceria Copello, with an entrepreneurial
history that began in 1826

Via Martiri della Liberazione, Caruggiudritu
in dialetto, è la più importante via del centro
di Chiavari e ha un fascino particolare.
Nel lungo porticato fatto ad archi in stile gotico
e pavimenti in pietra ben levigata, si trovano
negozi nuovi alternati alle botteghe d’epoca, che
custodiscono nel loro stile liberty, lo spirito creativo
e laborioso dei chiavaresi.
All’inizio del caruggio si incontra la gioielleria
Rocca con la sua meravigliosa scaffalatura in legno:
le vetrine sono legate tra loro da mappe
che, ruotando sui perni in ferro, si aprono sul
porticato. «Si apre come un libro di fiabe con i
disegni in rilievo. Questa struttura interamente
in legno di abete è stata voluta dal primo proprietario,
Copello, che nel 1890 crea con l’artigiano
e falegname Foppiano un insieme di vetrine
espositive che invitano il passante a
fermarsi e a guardare orologi, gioielli e preziosi
custoditi nelle teche» spiega Giovanna Ferretto,
proprietaria dell’oreficeria. Copello, uno dei tanti
chiavaresi emigrati in Argentina due secoli fa,
a fine ‘800 torna nella città nativa e siccome ha
fatto fortuna come gioielliere e orafo, crea questo
negozio.«Nella configurazione originale
c’erano altre due vetrine legate all’intera struttura
, che venivano appese alle colonne del porticato.
All’interno dell’oreficeria c’era anche la
cassaforte in legno e ferro, sempre costruita da
Via Martiri della Liberazione. Caruggiudritu in
dialect, the “Straight Alleyway”, is the most
important street in the center of Chiavari.
And it has a special fascination. Along the long
portico that lines the street with its Gothic arches
and its well-polished stone flooring, new shops
alternate with historic shops which still act as
custodians for their Art Nouveau style which
reflects the creative and laborious spirit of the
people of Chiavari.
At the start of the “alleyway”, is the jewelry shop,
Gioielleria Rocca with its marvelous wood shelving.
The showcases are held together by hinges which
rotate on iron knobs, opening onto the arcaded
portico. “It opens just like a book of fables with
drawings in three-dimensions” explains the present
owner, Giovanna Ferretto. “The structure is entirely
in fir. Copello, the very first owner in 1890, came up
with the idea using the skills of his artisan cabinetmaker,
Foppiano, as he sought an ensemble of
showcases that would invite the passer-by to stop
and look at the watches, jewels, and precious
objects on show.” Copello was actually one of the
many Chiavaresi who emigrated to Argentina two
centuries ago. At the end of the 1800s he returned
to his native town, and since he had made a fortune
as a jeweler and goldsmith, he opened this shop. In
