AChiavari, nel laboratorio dei
fratelli Levaggi, viene
costruita l’autentica sedia
chiavarina. Esportata ed
apprezzata in tutto il mondo, fu
ideata dall’ebanista Giuseppe
Gaetano Descalzi nel 1807.
Descalzi inseguiva il progetto di
una sedia robusta leggera e dalla
forma elegante. L’intelaiatura
del sedile fu realizzata con fili di
salice tessuti a spiga per renderla
compatta ed elastica, mentre per
la struttura fu utilizzato legno di
ciliegio dal basso peso specifico.
Dopo due secoli la “chiavarina”
mantiene le sue originali
peculiarità anche se si sono
affinate le tecniche costruttive e
si è ampliata la gamma dei
modelli.

Levaggi ha aperto i battenti nel
1963 quando i quattro fratelli
hanno rilevato la ditta dove
lavoravano e, resistendo al
mercato della produzione
industriale, hanno rilanciato la
costruzione delle sedie fatta a
mano secondo la tradizione.
«Oggi abbiamo macchine che
accelerano le lavorazioni del
legno, ma tutti i tagli, le
piegature e le finiture sono fatte
a mano – racconta Paolo Levaggi
(nella foto) - Il prodotto è molto
resistente grazie alla perfezione
degli incastri incollati a caldo tra
loro, e ciò permette di non
usare viti e chiodi. L’impagliatura
è rimasta praticamente uguale ai
prototipi costruiti da Descalzi. A
quei tempi per impagliare si
usava la corteccia dei salici che
crescevano nei nostri fiumi, oggi
si importa il bambù
dall’Indonesia».
L’ultimo tipo di sedia messo sul
mercato dalla società Levaggi si
chiama “super color”: è la
classica chiavarina (nella foto)
vestita dei colori dell’arcobaleno.
E’ stata proposta da un giovane
designer di Chiavari, Davide
Conti, e ha raccolto i consensi
del pubblico.

Chiavari. In the workshop of
the Levaggi brothers, the
authentic “chiavarina” chair is
being built. Exported and
appreciated across the world, it
was the brainchild of Giuseppe
Gaetano Descalzi, a cabinetmaker,
in1807. Descalzi was
seeking a chair that would be
strong, but light, and every
elegant in form. The framework
of the seat was made in woven
willow to make it compact and
elastic, while the structure used
lightweight cherry wood. After
two centuries the “chiavarina”
still keep its original
characteristics even if
construction techniques have
been refined and the range of
models amplified.
The artisans at “F.lli Levaggi”
opened their doors in 1963
when four brothers took over
the company where they
worked. They defied industrial
production, and re-launched the
construction of hand-made
chairs that followed tradition.
“Today we do use machines, but
only to accelerate the working
of the wood. All of our cuts,
folds, and finishes are entirely
done by hand,” explains Paolo
Levaggi. “The product is very
resistant thanks to the
perfection of the joints that are
hot glued to each other. This
allows us to do without nails
and screws. The woven seat has
not changed since the times of
Descalzi. Then, they used the
bark of the willows that grew
along our streams, now we
import bamboo from Indonesia.”

The latest chair that Levaggi has
put on the market is called,

all the colors of the rainbow. It

Conti, and the public just loves it.
