cambio». Poi pernottano all’hotel di fronte alla
stazione che non è immutato, ma ha conservato
l’esterno. I fratelli consigliano una visita al
mercato dei fiori, noi aggiungiamo, per esempio,
il ristorante Balzi Rossi -casomai il buffet della
stazione appaia un filo troppo veloce- che sta
lì, a picco sul mare, dal 1913 ed è meta di gourmet.
Il caffè o la merenda invece, si prendono alla
pasticceria Viale che hai i suoi 112 anni di
esperienza e un certo impegno creativo: le specialità
sono la torta rossina - al Rossese, di loro
invenzione - e le castagnole Deco. Lo shopping si
può fare da Franco calzature - fornitissimo, che
tuttavia non più di mezzo secolo - un’istituzione,
anche non somiglia a una bottega storica.
Ma nella città di frontiera, la bottega storica è a
cielo aperto: il celebre, eterno mercato del venerdì.
Un’esperienza unica.
A Bordighera Klaus e Erika dormono all’Hotel
Capo Ampelio, soggiorno di lusso che esiste ancora
ma - dell’originale - rimangono soltanto le
palme. Così liquidano Bordighera e poi Ospedaletti,
i due intellettuali impertinenti: «Sempre
spiaggia sassosa. Neanche un Casinò riesce a
consolare per tutto questo riposante deserto, e
nemmeno a distrarci. Si può andare a Sanremo
con il tram».
Prima di seguire i fratelli nel vortice della mondanità,
ricordiamo en passant il primo tennis
club d’Italia, che merita una visita dal sapore di
pellegrinaggio. Fondato da turisti lusso che, forse,
decoravano le ville con gli argenti dell’antica
gioielleria Gibertini in via Vittorio Emanuele. È
piccolissima, quindi nasconde grandi tesori. Non
lontano si trova il negozio di complementi d’arredo
Richetti, che saggiamente ha lasciato intatti
gli interni e persino gli scuri esterni. A pochi
passi, una camiceria non particolarmente
invitante ha tenuto l’insegna del vecchio laboratorio
fotografico Philips. Più recenti - sul mezzo
secolo - il bar Atù sul lungomare Argentina e
il Nadia, all’angolo con la strada che porta alla
stazione, famoso nei ruggenti sixties/seventies
per il toast all’alba, dopo la discoteca. Dopo lo
stress da shopping, meritano una sosta
- con passeggiata però - il giardino

station has not changed either. Outside it looks just
the same. Brother and sister suggest a visit to the
flower market. We at Blue would add, for example,
a visit to the Ristorante Balzi Rossi (just in case
the buffet at the station seems just a touch too
fast). It’s been there, on its cliff above the sea, since
1913, and it is the destination of gourmets. Coffee
or a quick snack should be done at the Pasticceria
Viale. It also has its 112 years of experience, along
with a certain creative bent – specialties being the
torta rossina (their invention, which uses locally
famous Rossese wine) and the castagnole Deco.
Shopping can be done at the shoe shop, Franco
Calzature – which has everything. Though less than
half a century old, it is an institution, even if it
doesn’t look like a historic boutique. This is because
on this frontier city, the historic boutique is open air
– it is the celebrated and eternal Friday market. A
unique experience.
In Bordighera Klaus and Erika sleep at the Hotel
Capo Ampelio. The luxury lodging is still there, but
not in its original form. Only the palms are left.
Listen to how our two impertinent intellectuals
cross off the lovely Riveira towns of Bordighera and
then Ospedaletti, “More pebble beaches. Not even a
casino to console those seeking distraction in this
peaceful desert. But you can get to Sanremo’s
[casino] by streetcar.”
Before we follow the two into a vortex of
worldliness, let us be reminded, in a by-the-way
manner, of Italy’s first tennis club. It is worth a visit
with a pilgrimage flavor to it. Founded by tourists,
it was a luxury like the silver that they used to
decorate their villas – much of which was supplied
by the tiny old jewelry shop, Gibertini, on Via
Vittorio Emanuele. Great things come in small
packages. Close by is the interior design shop called
Richetti, who wisely has left its interiors and even it
outside shutters unchanged. Just a few steps
further, a shirt shop – which is not particularly
inviting – has kept the sign of the old Philips
photography lab. More recent – only half a century
old – is Bar Atù on the sea promenade, Lungomare
Argentina; and Nadia, on the corner of the street
that leads to the station, famous during the roaring
sixties (and seventies) for its after-discotheque toast
to the dawn. To ease the stress that comes with
shopping, take a break with a promenade along the
exotic Pallanca garden on Via Madonna della
Ruota. It is over fifty years old. Even older (over a
century) is a cactus nursery called Allavena (in the
Arziglia quarter) with its lovely garden. The
