in quello che ritrae?
Non saprei. Forse non la cerco nemmeno. Non so
neanche se crederci, visti tutti i disastri che il genere
umano, egoista e meschino, combina al Pianeta.
Però il senso dell’humour di chi vive in povertà
mi ha spesso fatto pensare positivo.
Lei è molto legato a India, Birmania e “Far East”
del mondo. Cosa pensa della vecchia Europa?
Mi affascina e vorrei starci di più. Sarò banale, ma
noi americani non siamo abituati a luoghi di così
preziosa antichità.
E dei popoli del “vecchio mondo”?
Di voi italiani mi emoziona la fierezza e il legame
che avete con la vostra storia, la vostra tradizione,
i vostri palazzi. Ed è curioso come basti prendere
un aereo per finire in Cina, dove per far spazio al
progresso demoliscono tutti i loro monumenti.
Quando ha iniziato a viversi il mondo in viaggio?
Da subito. Messo qualche soldo da parte, appena
uscito dall’università sono partito. Prima l’Europa,
poi l’India, a farmi bombardare di stimoli. La fotografia
è stato il mio “modo” di viaggiare. Ma lo dico
spesso ai giovani: l’importante è trovare il modo
di fare della strada per “respirare” il nostro Pianeta.
Ha mai viaggiato senza fotografare?
Mai. Anche perché fotografare ti permette di viverti
il viaggio in maniera ancora più intensa.
Quando aspetti lo scatto giusto sei come in uno
stato di ipersensibilità, dove non c’è né passato
né futuro, e ti puoi godere il solo presente in una
dimensione tutta tua.
A 61 anni scatta ancora per passione o solo per
professione?
Dipende. Ma ho sempre la macchina con me (accenna
alla tracolla africana colorata che porta sulle
spalle) perché mi piace il mio mestiere. Non mi
sono mai svegliato la mattina dicendomi “Oddio,
devo andare a fotografare”. Dovrebbe essere un diritto
di ogni lavoratore, per ogni professione.

dangerous. When I take photographs, I do it only to tell a
truth, to testify to a story.
And yet, some of the most horrible and terrifying
moments in recent human history have passed in
front of your lense – from Vietnam and the Gulf War
to the Arab Spring. Do you still see hope each time?
Do you find it?
I wouldn’t know. Maybe I don’t even look for it. Maybe I
don’t even believe in it, seeing all the disasters that
human egoism and selfishness do to ourselves and our
planet.
How do the people of the Old World strike you?
With respect to you Italians, what strikes me is your
pride, and the ties that you have with your history, your
tradition, your buildings. It’s sort of funny that all I need
to do is catch a plane to China, and there they demolish
all their old monuments to make room for progress.
You travel for work. When did you hit the road?
Right away. I had some savings, so the moment I got out
of university, I set off. To travel more and learn more in
depth about other cultures gave me joy from the very
start. Photography has been my “mode” of travel. I often
say to the young people that I meet – it is important to
travel. You need to get to know, to breathe, to discover
our planet.
Have you ever traveled without taking photographs?
Never. Also because photography lets you live the trip in
an even more intense way. When you wait for the right
shot, you are in a state of hypersensitivity where there is
no past and no future. You live the present, in a
dimension that is all your own.
At age 61, are you still passionate about
photography? Or is it now just a job?
It depends. In general I always have a camera on me for
the pleasure of having it, because I love what I do. I don’t
wake up in the morning asking myself, “Oh God, do I
have to go out and take photographs?” It should be that
way for all workers in all professions.

professione già da ventenne,

tiene a precisare) il diploma
universitario, i suoi reportage gli
hanno permesso di conquistare le
copertine delle riviste più
prestigiose -Time, Life, Newsweek,
Geo, National Geographic –
rendendolo un guru della
fotografia del nostro secolo.
Inviato su mille fronti di guerra, da
Beirut alla Cambogia, dal Kuwait
all’ex Jugoslavia all’Afghanistan,
vive perennemente in viaggio - più
facilmente in qualche parte
dell’Asia che non in America - e
non ha hobby al di fuori della
fotografia. A Palazzo Ducale fino
al 24 febbraio prossimo, la mostra
Viaggio intorno all’uomo si può

Veteran from the Magnum
Agency, several time winner of the
World Press Photo Award (the
Nobel Prize of photography), for
decades now, Steve McCurry has
been telling our world through
images of incredible beauty. Born
in Philadelphia in 1950, he was
already a professional
photographer at age twenty, when
he obtained (“with top grades”, as
he underlines) his university
degree. His photographs have
made the covers of the most
prestigious of magazines – Time,
Life, Newsweek, Geo, National
Geographic – making him the
photographer of our era. His show
at Genoa’s Ducal Palace (until
February 24), “Voyage Around
Man” can also be enjoyed with the
aid of an audio-guide in which
McCurry tells the background,
details and anecdotes of each of
the 200 shots in the exhibition.
