che cerca in tutte le maniere di stare al passo con
i tempi, con gli articoli da regalo e tante novità a
fare da contraltare all’utensileria, ai casalinghi e agli
oggetti che caratterizzano un negozio di ferramenta.
Le antiche scaffalature che arrivano a sfiorare il
soffitto a volta contengono una miriade di piccoli
cassetti, dove sono custodite le più svariate qualità
di chiodi, viti e bulloni. «E non ha idea di che cosa c’è
nel retro», aggiunge Francesco.
La sua impresa, a Savona, è una specie di istituzione.
Il negozio data 1890, quando uno zio previdente
acquistò quello spazio al piano terra di un
bel palazzo appena costruito. Avevano fatto fortuna,
i Fava, grazie a un prozio che aveva importato
da Parigi, agli albori dell’era industriale, una macchina
per fare i chiodi. E quel negozio sulla piazza
dell’ospedale San Paolo era diventato un punto di
riferimento per i savonesi.
Enrico e Valentina Spirito si sono trovati, invece,
capitani d’impresa quasi all’improvviso. Quando,
nel 2010, morì papà Glauco, lui aveva 38 anni, lei

comincia nel 1875 nella sede di corso Ricci.
Un’eccezionale alluvione, tanti anni fa, in un attimo
portò via tutto e rese inservibili le macchine.
Nonno Enrico non si dette per vinto e ripartì sulla
collina di Valloria; nel 2003 il nuovo trasloco: a
Cosseria, nell’entroterra, dove potevano trovare
spazio i macchinari necessari per stare al passo con
i tempi.
Valentina ed Enrico ricordano quanto il padre era innamorato
del suo lavoro: «Guardava e riguardava
con soddisfazione quei cataloghi preziosi realizzati
a regola d’arte». Una passione che oggi coinvolge in
pieno i due giovani imprenditori. In azienda si sono
divisi i compiti, hanno quattro collaboratori su cui
contare nella stampa di libri, calendari, depliant, cataloghi,
spesso d’arte. La qualità sempre altissima, sia
nell’opera importante, sia in un depliant pubblicitario,
è il loro segreto nel lavoro.
A proposito, come vanno gli ordini, in tempi come
questi? «Le difficoltà ci sono. Ma chi non ne ha? C’è
meno lavoro, per fortuna noi abbiamo puntato molto
su un settore di nicchia, gli stampati di alta qualità.
Può sembrare banale – risponde Valentina - ma
ripenso con piacere a quando dovevamo stampare
le schede elettorali e si lavorava 24 ore su 24, senza
sosta. Io ero bambina, mi sembrava che la casa di noi
tutti si fosse trasferita lì, per tanti giorni. E un altro
bel ricordo è legato al giorno in cui, in gita al Museo
d’Orsay a Parigi, vi trovai un catalogo d’arte che avevamo
realizzato noi. Quel giorno mi sentii molto orgogliosa
della mia famiglia».

Gioacchino and the grandson of Francesco (though he
decided to break with tradition and call his son,
Alessandro). Today Francesco Fava runs a company
which tries above all to keep pace with the times – gift
articles and many novelties are offered in counterpoint
to the tools, household equipment, and other objects
typical of a hardware store. The antique shelving goes
up to the vaulted ceiling. Filled with myriad little
drawers, they hold the most varied qualities of nails,
screws, and bolts. “And you have no idea of what’s in
the back,” adds Francesco.
His company in Savona is a sort of institution. The shop
dates to 1890, when an uncle with great foresight
bought the ground floor of a nice building that had just
been constructed. The Fava family had already made its
fortune thanks to a great-uncle who had imported from
Paris, at the dawn of the industrial era, a machine that
made nails. And so, the shop on the Piazza of San Paolo
Hospital became a point of reference for the area.
In a similar tale, in a similar enterprise, Enrico and
Valentina found themselves running their family
company without any warning. In 2010, when their
father, Glauco died, Enrico was 38, Valentina, 30. They
were the fourth generation of printers in Grafiche
Fratelli Spirito, which was founded in 1875 with
headquarters on Corso Ricci. An exceptional flood so
many years ago, swept everything away, and destroyed
the machinery. Grandfather Enrico, however did not
give up. He moved all to the Hill of Valloria. Then in
2003, there was yet another move, to Cosseria, in the
hinterlands, where there was more space for the bigger
machines needed in the present.
Valentina and Enrico remember how their father loved
his work. “He would look with satisfaction at those
exquisite catalogues done in a state of the art manner.”
The same passion now affects our two young
entrepreneurs. They have divided up the tasks between
them. They have four collaborators who help them print
books, calendars, brochures, and catalogues (often art
catalogues). Their quality is always very high, both for
important works as for advertising brochures. And that
is the secret of their work.
And how are orders in times like these? “There is no
denying that difficulties are there. But who doesn’t have
them? There is less work. Luckily we have found our
niche - high quality printing. It may seem a bit banal,”
confesses Valentina, “but I am thinking with pleasure
about when we will be able to print the electoral ballots,
and work 24 hours a day without stop. When I was a
child, I remember the whole house would move to the
print shop for several days. And when on a trip to the
Orsay Museum in Paris, I found another lovely souvenir
of those times – an art catalogue that we had printed.
That made me so proud of my family.”
