When Shops Look like Museums
Il nuovo speciale elenco delle botteghe storiche, compilato dalle istituzioni locali e dalle associazioni dei commercianti,
ne sta già vagliando 81. Una esposizione le ha fatte conoscere a cittadini e turisti

na città piena di sorprese, di
«Uporte scolpite in marmo,
ardesia e… di biancheria al posto
del cielo». Questa era per Paul
Valery Genova. Città d’arte
“superba”, di cultura, ma anche di
buona gastronomia e di tradizioni.
Uno dei patrimoni genovesi più
tradizionali sono le botteghe
storiche cui quest’anno è stata
dedicata una mostra nel palazzo
della Borsa Valori. Un tesoro a cui
le istituzioni locali hanno riservato
tempo e risorse. È nato così
l’elenco delle Botteghe Storiche,
idoneo a trasformarsi in un
itinerario turistico-culturali per
visitatori e genovesi.
La bottega, che nasce insieme con
le trasformazioni urbanistiche che
la borghesia, tra Ottocento e
Novecento imprime alla città, è un
bene collettivo e se non possiamo
definirla proprio un monumento, di
sicuro compone l’identità di una
città ed è un patrimonio da
conservare perché l’antica arte non
vada perduta. Molti antichi negozi
non sono solo esercizi commerciali
in cui comprare dolci prelibati o
argenti antichi, ma veri musei
ricchi di architettura, arredi, archivi
documentari e fotografici, antichi
macchinari e strumenti di lavoro.
La Regione Liguria nel 2005 ha
gettato le basi di un’opera di
valorizzazione di questi
“monumenti vivi”, testimonianza
del fil rouge che lega la Genova di
oggi a quella del passato. Sfida
raccolta nel 2011 da Comune,
Soprintendenze per i Beni
ambientali e paesaggistici e per i
Beni artistici, Storici ed
Etnoantropologici della Liguria,
Camera di Commercio di Genova,
city full of surprises. Of
“Aportals carved in marble,
slate, and … laundry up against
the sky,” said Paul Valery about
Genoa. A city of art that is
“superb” [Genoa’s nickname].
Culture, but also good food and
traditions. And one of Genoa’s
most traditional heritages are its
historic shops, which this year
have their own exhibition at the
Palazzo della Borsa (the old stock
market) and to which local
institutions have dedicated time
and resources. That is how the list
of historic “bottega”s [a word
that includes little shops and
small businesses] was born,
perfect for its transformation into
a cultural tourist itinerary for
both visitors and Genoese alike.
The bottega was born at the same
time – between the 1800s and
1900s – as urban transformation
by the bourgeoisie was imposed
on the city. They are a collective
heritage. And though we cannot
really define them as monuments,
they surely form part of the
identity of a city. They are a
heritage that must be conserved
so that their ancient art is not
lost. Many old shops are not just
commercial exercises in which
one can buy delicious desserts or
antique silver, but true museums
that are rich in architecture,
furnishings, archives of
documents and photographs,
ancient machinery, and work
instruments.
The Region of Liguria in 2005 set
base values to bring these “living
monuments” to life, a thin line
tying Genoa of today to its past.
This challenge was met in 2011 by
Ascom-Confcommercio,
Confesercenti, Confartigianato e
Cna genovesi che hanno, appunto,
istituito l’elenco delle botteghe
storiche e creato una commissione
di valutazione per chi voglia farne
parte. Per essere iscritti nell’elenco
occorre avere come minimo 70
anni di attività e possedere almeno
tre delle condizioni essenziali
identificate dalle due
Soprintendenze: elementi
architettonici, arredi, attrezzature,
documenti e contesto storico
ambientale.
Fino a oggi hanno presentato
domanda di iscrizione 67 botteghe
genovesi, 14 delle quali hanno già
passato il vaglio della commissione
e sono state protagoniste -
attraverso immagini e brevi testi,
cui hanno lavorato anche gli
studenti del corso di Fotografia

Heritage and that for the Artistic,
Historic, and Ethno-
Anthropological Heritage of
Liguria, the Genoa Chamber of
Commerce, Ascom-
Confcommercio, Confesercenti,
Confartigianato, and the Genoese
C.N.A. They instituted a List of
Historic Botteghe and created a
commission to evaluate those
who wished to be on the list. To
be registered, a bottega needs to
have at least 70 years of activity
and possess at least three of the
five essential conditions
indentified: architectural
elements, furnishings, tools,
documents, and historic
environmental context.
Up till today, 67 Genoese
botteghe have requested
registration. 14 of these have
