nel 1875 dove trovano spazio moderni macchinari per stare al passo con i tempi

inevitabilmente, Francesco. Così da quattro
“Fava
o cinque generazioni. Gioacchino e Francesco:
in due nomi una dinasty, quella dei Fava, e un
mestiere portato avanti dal 1650 a oggi. Perché a oltre
tre secoli fa risale una causa in tribunale per una
fornitura di cordami, in cui una delle parti in causa
si chiama Fava. Di certo, allora, la famiglia aveva un
alloggio in darsena a Savona: casa-bottega specializzata
nella manutenzione di barche. Un altro documento,
la fattura per il pennone di una nave, è di
epoca napoleonica. Erano esperti calafati i Fava, e
carpentieri: savonesi da generazioni.
Francesco Fava ha 63 anni ed è oggi il titolare dello
storico negozio di piazza Giulio II, davanti al vecchio
ospedale, a Savona: una struttura che dopo
l’abbandono viene finalmente abbattuta, per lasciare
posto, in fondo alla Savona ottocentesca, a
un pezzo di città del futuro, davanti ai viali alberati
del Prolungamento a mare. E’, naturalmente, figlio
di Gioacchino e nipote di Francesco (ma lui ha voluto
rompere con la tradizione chiamando Alessan-
Gioacchino e figli” or in English, “[Mr.]

doing for over three centuries, since at least 1650 –
documents show a Fava in a legal tussle in the courts
regarding a supply of ropes. At the time, the family had
their place on the docks in Savona. It was a house cum
workshop which specialized in the maintenance of
boats. In another document we see the invoice for the
pennant of a ship in the Napoleonic age. These Favas
were expert caulkers and carpenters, and had lived on
the Riviera in the town of Savona for generations.
Today’s Francesco Fava is 63. And he is the present
owner of the historic shop on Piazza Giulio II, in front of
the site of the old hospital in Savona, which was
gradually abandoned, and eventually demolished,
leaving space – at the bottom of the 19 th century part
of the city – for a piece of the city of the future in front
of the tree-lined streets of the Prolungamento
