Giovanni Boccaccio all’esteriore gradevolezza di personaggi, gesti, ambiente.
affinità con il pensiero di Niccolò Puccini è nota 298 – era, ancora una volta, ‘patriottica’;
secolo XIX. Antecedente al restauro.
The allusion, in Palazzo de’ Rossi too and at the behest of the client Girolamo—whose deep
affinity with the ideas of Niccolò Puccini is known 298 —was, once again, “patriotic’; but it
also went beyond this sense, covertly prefiguring a perfect humanity, in line with Masonic
ideology. This time, however, the esoteric reference, as well as the “patriotic” one, were
prudently concealed under the guise of a pleasing narrative, with a dreamy evocation of a
story belonging exclusively to the world of literature: and so, at least in appearance, not
tainted by dangerous political ideas, in that year of 1831 in which grand-ducal policy had
tightened its control over “liberals” and suspended the meetings of the Pistoian “Società
degli Onori Parentali ai Grandi Italiani.” 299
We do not know, for the moment, if and in what way the numerous rooms of the Palazzo
de’ Rossi were inhabited during the 19th century. Some “apartments” in the late 18thcentury
building must have long remained empty and unused, judging by the lack of internal
alterations and modernizations, especially on the western side of the third floor. 300
The elegant figured medallions that adorn the modified cross vaults of the two rooms leading
into the east-facing “quarters” on the third floor can be ascribed to sometime prior to the
death of Francesco dei Rossi, at the age of eighty, on April 20, 1850. 301
This was the last artistic intervention of significance in Palazzo de’ Rossi in the 19th century, fruit
of a mature “classicizing” academic culture expressed with skill as far as drawing and color are
concerned, but not averse to using serial craft techniques to achieve the end result finale. In fact
stamped decorations, the latest vernacularization of a tired late-baroque suited to more habitual and
“familiar” settings, adorn the frames around the painted subjects with minute tracery or elaborate
volutes. They appear to belong to two different thematic series, one for each room. On the four
segments of the cross vault of the first room as you enter are set tiny landscapes of a “Romanticpicturesque”
type (figs. 123-126); on the rounded edges of the four vaulting cells in the next room we
see mixtilinear medallions containing elegant depictions in miniature of figures from the classical
world, on a reddish brown background, in pairs: Zeus/Eros; Paris/Aphrodite (figs. 130-133). 302
118. Particolare dell’affresco de La danza, Pampinea, ‘regina’
