inumazioni, permettendo così uno studio migliore in laboratorio;
White e A.P. Folkens, The human bone manual, Amsterdam,
2005.
History of human life span and mortality, Budapest, 1970. Consistono
from human skeletal remains, Fayetteville, 1994; M. Brickley J.I.
Southampton, 2004.
suddivise: adulto giovane (20-35 anni), adulto maturo (35-50
anni), adulto senile (oltre i 50 anni).
ilium: a new method for the determination of adult skeletal age at
death, in “American Journal of Physical Anthropology”, vol.
68, 1985, pp. 15-28.
stature and cranial capacity in moden man, in “Journal of Human
Evolution, vol. 7, 1978, pp. 513-518.
143. D. R. Brothwell, Digging up bones, Londra, 1981.
di alcuni segmenti e presenza di iati tra i corpi vertebrali;
coste destre e sinistre; infine l’omero e l’ulna destri risultano
vertebrale presenta una curvatura con convessità a sinistra;
temporale e quello parietale destri quasi completi, l’osso temporale
146. Mastoide grande e globosa, inion e linee nucali piuttosto
marcate, mento squadrato, gonion everso, dente dell’epistrofeo
di grandi dimensioni, testa dell’omero di grande diametro;
153. D. R. Brothwell, Digging up bones, cit..
shaped funeral urn with flat bottom and in a “very light clay”
two-handled jar. The two containers were brought to light
by chance in the 18th century, documented exclusively by
some drawings of the materials and by a brief summary, kept
at the Marucelliana library in Florence among the papers of
Anton Francesco Gori (P. Perazzi, Carta archeologica cit., pp.
443-446, fig. 3, n. 2.3).
123. The original context of the example in question, from
phase 3 (70 A.D.-3rd century), discourages comparisons
with the Hayes 61 type African bowls, similar only from a
formal viewpoint (for the relationship between fine pottery
from the stratifications of phases VI and VII at Antico Palazzo
135. Thanks of course go to those who carried out the excavation
of these graves, allowing for better study in the
laboratory; so thanks to I. Baldi, S. Gori, G. Incammisa and
G. Millemaci.
136. In fact, the church of San Jacopo in Castellare appears
in official documents only from the 12th century, after its
erection, as confirmed by the excavations carried out there,
still for the most part unpublished. For more information
137. Precisely this consideration gave rise to the manual by
T.D. White and A.P. Folkens, The human bone manual, Amsterdam,
2005.
138. The elements are those defined by G. Acsádi, J.
Nemeskéri, History of human life span and mortality, Budapest,
1970. They basically consist of a balanced assessment of cranial
characteristics (for example, morphology of the mandible,
of the supraorbital margin, the size of the mastoid processes,
etc), metric elements (measurements of full bones,
or their segments), and particularly the morphology of the
bones of the pelvis, the main element that distinguishes between
male and female.
Remains, Southampton, 2004. Since there were no sub adults
in the sample, all references to the latter, for which there are
different examination methods, were avoided. The classes
are divided as follows: young adult (age 20-35), mature adult
(age 35-50), old adult (over age 50).
141. Since it is known that analysis of the sutures is no longer
a completely reliable method, it was used mainly in the case
of tb. 2, since the cranium was the only part of the skeleton
that could be examined.
144. This information was deduced from the analysis of the
block lift containing the trunk and from the excavation
photographs. From the partial block lift, the vertebrae are
clearly detached, with slight off-axis position of certain segments
and the presence of openings between the vertebral
bodies; then there is clear asymmetry in the position of the
right and left ribs; lastly, the right humerus and ulna are in
close connection. In the excavation photos, the cranium appears
rotated rightwards, with the mandible still connected
and closed; the thoracic section of the vertebral column is
curved convexly to the left; the clavicles are positioned obliquely
to the axis of the body; both humeri are intra-rotated;
the right forearm is distended and in connection with
the elbow, while the left one was not preserved.
145. In detail, the following are preserved: the cranium, the
shoulder girdle, the thorax, the humeri, the proximal third
of the right ulna, a fourth right metacarpal bone. Surviving
from the skull, whose numerous fragments were partially
recomposed, is the right temporal and parietal bones, almost
in their entirety, incomplete left temporal bone, part
of the frontal bone, including the right orbital part, incomplete
squamous part of the occipital bone, the frontal process
of both zygomatic bones, a fragment of maxilla, and incomplete
mandible.
146. Large and globular mastoid, inion and considerably
marked nuchal lines, square chin, everted gonion, large sized
dens of the axis, large diameter of the head of the humerus;
on the contrary, the thin supraorbital margin must be noted.
147. Patent lambdoid suture, coronal and sagittal suture
amost obliterated on the on the endocranial side and in fusion
on the exocranial side.
148. The insertion of the deltoid and flexor muscles appears
more developed on the right, and the diameter of the diaphysis
is larger on the right. On the right humerus, the insertions
of the brachioradialis and extensor carpi radialis brevis
muscles appear to be very developed, which is not observed
on the left humerus.
149. The insertions of the triceps and the supinator are particularly
pronounced in the part preserved.
150. Regarding the remaining ones, no hypothesis have been
formulated given the absence of relative alveoli.
151. In truth, evident wear is present also on the only mandibular
molar in situ, the third right, which could only be
explained by an occlusal anomaly in opposition with the
second maxillar molar, whose wear is not identifiable since
it is missing.
152. The others are located in the collar area in an interproximal
position, apart from one on the vestibular surface.
