NOTE
Armonici in via Curtatone e Montanara, dove, ancora almeno
soffitte della sede della Cassa di Risparmio in Via Roma;
nell’attigua casa Lapini, acquistata dagli eredi
in human activities, our word is never the last one.
The book is also enriched with a considerable array of photographs, mostly from the talented
eye of renowned Pistoiese photographer Aurelio Amendola.
With his equipment, which seems mysterious to me, but which in his hands becomes magical,
he spent many a day inside the Palazzo, capturing the intensity of its splendour, its most
eloquent details, its most illuminating and persuasive angles and perspectives.
But given the scientific aims of the volume, I should also draw attention to the great many
other photographs rigorously documenting the essays, including the piece by Lucia Gai.
I am very much aware, having done so myself in the past, how laborious it can be, once the
task has been completed, to coordinate, stimulate and collect the pieces written by the people
who, for different reasons, have something to say about the achieved task. To him I owe
my personal thanks for successfully landing the plane after a far from smooth flight.
At the end of the tale, we are left with a Palazzo once stripped of its functions and purpose, a
patchwork of interventions of varying quality, but now restored to a cohesive function as the
headquarters of the Fondazione and to be enjoyed by the general public.
In conclusion, I think I can say that the endeavour has been worthwhile.
NOTES
1 For me, even the fountain at the corner is part of the
street. Back then, it continuously poured out the coolest
of water, which fogged up glass jugs and bottles in summer.
It is second only to the fountain in Via dello Specchio, now
an object of mystery and, to my knowledge, no longer accessible.
2 The dances of Pistoia “society” took place inside other
palazzi in the town, in particular the “Rooms”, as the former
headquarters of the Accademia degli Armonici in Via
Curtatone e Montanara was once called, where, at least until
the 1950s, the debutantes ball was hosted, marking the
“coming out” of young eighteen-year-olds of good family.
3 From 1992 to 2003, the Fondazione was housed in the attics
of the headquarters of the Cassa di Risparmio in Via
Roma. In 2003, it was moved to the first floor of Palazzo
De’ Rossi, for which limited work was carried out, only on
the first floor of the building. In 2009, it moved again to
the Lapini building next door, bought by Don Mario’s heirs
in 2004. It remained there until 2012, when it finally took
possession of the entire Palazzo which, in the meantime,
had been renovated.
