I reperti osteologici recuperati
insofar as possible, of who and in what conditions people lived in the early Middle Ages in Pistoia.
As regards the current site, the bones are poorly preserved, incomplete and fragmentary
as a result of the chemical and physical conditions of the earth and of the mechanical damage
suffered during subsequent anthropic interventions. The bone findings were subject to cleaning
and recomposition treatments at the Laboratorio di Archeoantropologia della Soprintendenza,
where they are currently kept. Their analysis sought to determine the sex, age at death, stature,
biomechanical stress conditions and lastly, the state of health of the deceased. That all this is
possible is no surprise, insofar as our skeletons carry traces of the surrounding environment,
thus allowing, for those capable of identifying them and studying them, the different aspects of
the individual to be recognised 137 . Furthermore, an assessment was also made of the position and
taphonomy of the graves: the study of the most important post-mortem modifications to be able
to reconstruct the exact position in which the deceased were laid to rest, which in turn provides
information on the adopted burial ritual. Burial practices have always had deep cultural roots; in
fact, each culture has developed its own ritual to accompany its loved ones in their eternal rest.
Before going further, it would seem appropriate to explain, insofar as possible, how the study
is carried out. The diagnosis of the sex based on the visual assessment of the decisive morphological
characteristics 138 . The age at death defined by way of the division into three classes
according to International Standards 139 , namely young adult, mature adult and old adult, based
on certain morphological features related to ageing: auricular surface of the ilium 140 , arthritic
degeneration, degree of osteoporosis, tooth wear, cranial sutures 141 . The age at death is therefore
intentionally “vague” and not because the study has not been detailed or has been hindered
by poor conservation of the material but because there is a considerable individual variability in
the ageing process. The height of the deceased is calculated, when possible, using the formulas
of Olivier et alii 142 , based on the dimensions of the long bones. The quantity of tartar and the
degree of periodontitis are determined on the basis of indications by Brothwell 143 .
