efficienza organizzativa.
Stesso lavoro dal venerdì al lunedì, stessa soddisfazione felice sul volto del Direttore e dei collaboratori;
opera ci siamo a lungo soffermati.
ing Monday I was in the room that was reserved for me in the Lapini building. And I remember
the proud satisfaction, which I fully shared, of all members of staff, but particularly of the manager
Umberto Guiducci, who had been the driving force behind the organisation of the relocation.
All the while, the machine continued to running smoothly.
Once again, we were working from the same temporary premises the Fondazione had been
in from June 2009 to September 2012.
Our final return to the renovated Palazzo De’ Rossi was another fine example of efficient
organisation.
It involved the same Friday night to Monday morning operation and the same look of delight
on the faces of the Manager and the members of staff. Only, this time, the satisfaction was
even more keenly felt, since we were returning to much more appealing surroundings, now
equipped with functional furnishings and efficient installations.
Let me to tell you that the Fondazione has a team of employees that every director would
love to have. To them I owe my deepest appreciation and my grateful and heartfelt praise.
We had to be ready by early September, because the official opening had long been set for
the twelfth of that month. For the occasion, we had requested the participation of Giuseppe
Guzzetti, chairman of ACRI – the association of Italian bank foundations – and chairman of
Fondazione Cariplo, the most important bank foundation in the country.
The official opening finally took place in the presence of numerous important guests, inevitably
selected according to their roles in local public and private institutions. The event
marked the passage of the building to its final function. Palazzo De’ Rossi was celebrated as
one of the finest and most important buildings in the city, a hub of activity, inspiration and
service to the entire community.
At the open day the next day, the Palazzo was open to the public. No one present could forget
the streams of curious visitors, all with looks of wonder on their faces at the beauty of
the Palazzo, many with tears of joy in their eyes at the memory of the times they had spent
in those rooms during their youth and, for some, their adult lives.
There was an air of familiarity, a rediscovered intimacy, an experience relived, as they climbed
the stairs, entered the rooms, up to the roof terrace with its glass windows on three sides,
overlooking the rooftops of Pistoia and offering a view of the city beyond compare.
Nearly all visitors were taken aback by the beauty of this Palazzo which, until now, had been
lost to time and perhaps never fully known. Admiring onlookers with a bittersweet nostalgia
for the days and hours spent in the rooms of the building, sometimes over the course of several
of years, especially on the first floor, where Canon Mario Lapini conducted the activities
that I have already described at length.
The meaning that Palazzo De’ Rossi holds for many residents of Pistoia could be seen
quite clearly on that occasion and every other time the building has been open to the
public.
This publication is dedicated to Palazzo De’ Rossi, legal and operational headquarters of
Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Pistoia e Pescia, and its complete restoration.
The work gone into its realisation has been nothing less than an act of devotion: to the Foundation,
the city, the Palazzo itself and to the memory of Canon Mario Lapini.
Given the intensity and the thoroughness of the restoration project, this is a unique opportunity
to share a commentary on the Palazzo, its history, its frescoes, its construction and the
cultural criteria that informed the restoration.
The complexity of the project and the many problems involved are presented in the essays
by those who addressed them.
The origins and historical events that have touched the Palazzo, as well as an exposition and
commentary of the areas of the building that are painted, frescoed or decorated are presented
by Lucia Gai. Such is the rigour and precision of her work that I might venture to describe
it as definitive, if I did not know that nothing in this world can be said to be so and that, even
