Aanbevelingen
Het is gewenst kankerpatiënten voor te lichten over wat zij specifiek kunnen verwachten
tijdens de behandeling, over de mogelijkheden van zelfzorg en over de verwachte uitkomst
en mogelijke bijwerkingen.
Herhaling van informatie is gezien onbekendheid, onzekerheid en angst van belang.
Communicatie vanuit een luisterende en inlevende houding met ruimte voor vragen en
emoties vermindert spanning en bevordert self-efficacy.
Het is nodig om bij herhaling onderscheid te maken tussen eventuele bijwerkingen van de
behandeling en mogelijke signalen van (terugkeer van) de ziekte.
Systematische screening van patiënten op mate van spanning leidt tot tijdige steun.
Afstemming met in psychosociale zorg gespecialiseerde hulpverleners is daarvoor gewenst.
In de palliatieve fase is goede voorlichting met aandacht voor de impact van behandelopties
op het dagelijks leven een voorwaarde. Voor een goede communicatie en besluitvorming is
het essentieel gevoelens, zorgen en verwachtingen te exploreren en kwaliteit-van-levenonderwerpen
expliciet te bespreken.
