2. Abstract
A big part of the human population is living in poverty. You can find the problem of poverty especially in the countries of the Third
World. The rich countries try to do their best to solve the problem of poverty by initiating projects for development cooperation.
However, the trade policy of the so called “developed” countries is onesided which makes it very difficult to change the situation in
the Third World. Another problem is that the projects for development cooperation just work at selected points. The gap between the
“rich north” and the “poor south” is widening. In times of globalization there is the risk that the instruments of development
cooperation do not work any more. So we have to find alternative solutions for cooperation. The system of neo-liberalism has to be
intervened in order to change the worldwide systems of government – for that purpose Fair Trade may provide effective impulses.
Although it has completely different goals than neo-liberalism it is nonetheless a part of the latter. Hence there might be a possibility
to change the system from inside. So Fair Trade can lead the way to show how fair payment, social work conditions and
environment-friendly production are possible in the current system.
The first part of my thesis presents some facts about Fair Trade in Austria. I chose the method of expert interviews to discuss Fair
Trade as an alternative for development cooperation and the current economic system. To introduce this subject I am going to list
some facts about global poverty and make an analysis of Austrian development cooperation.
The use of Fair Trade as a communication medium of development cooperation is discussed as well as its role in communicating
different world views. Apart from that my project will raise some questions and inspire to discuss them; questions about the
development of our society which has forgotten how to keep house with its resources in order to guarantee the following generations
the survival in an intact environment and a human world(economy)…
