“The first accurate and scientifically important account
of Russia in the West” (Rössler). Second edition (the
first, Wien 1549) of the only text on the land of the
Russians accessible to men of the Renaissance. This
work, made with great seriousness from the author’s
researches on place, gives an encyclopedic vision on
the politics, religion, commerce and culture of Moscow
Russia, and is based on his experiences as a diplomat in
Russia between 1517 and 1527 (he knew Russian well
and had also access to archives that are now lost). VD16

on label, a good copy, with a long, early manuscript
note at the margin of title (light browning for the
quality of the paper, a wormhole at inner margin, at
bottom of first quires, small stain at margin of first

First Froschauer edition of this classic of gastronomy,
and the first edited by Gabriel Hummelberger, probably
born in Ravensburg, physician and botanist at Isny
and other towns in Swabia, with his extensive notes.
“… a cookery book which is chiefly concerned with
soups and sauces, but gives also a number of recipes on
how to prepare fish, flesh and fowl” (Simon BG 124).
