traced back to the ‚Orbis pictus‘ of Comenius, first
published in 1658. The plates were produced by Ludwig
Ebner, C. Ermer, Theodor Götz, Ludwig Hess,
Conrad Horney, J. B. Hoessel, C. and G. Starcke … and
other Weimar artists under the direction of Melchior
Kraus and Johann Heinrich Lips” (Nissen p. 77). Volume
12 with some occasional worming in the upper
margin. The plates are of a very high quality and all
beautifully handcoloured. The text is both in German

An attractive uniformly bound copy of the finest natural
history encyclopaedia ever made for children. The
work was published in 237 parts over a long period, for
this reason complete copies are very rare, especially the
last published volume. Friederich Bertuch 1747–1822
was one of the most important publishers of the period,
in 1790 he established the famous “Landes Industrie
Comptoir”, publishing in 1791 Goethe’s work
on Optics as well as many other works of importance.

An attractive uniformly bound set of the early years of
this famous and beautifully illustrated magazine. The
magazine has continued publication almost without interruption
to the present day and has become a national
institute of which Englishmen may justly be proud. It
should be noted that the colouring of the earlier volumes,
as offered above, is far superior to the later ones.
“It is, indeed, the oldest current scientific periodical of
its kind with coloured illustrations in the world, and
in the beauty of production and high standard of its
contributions it can claim a unique place” (Henrey II,
p. 302). Title pages to volumes 6 to 10 have been discarded
by the binder, who got confused as there are 2
volumes, each with a title-page, bound in one. Added to
the set the Index to vols. 1–53. The first 5 volumes are in
a slightly later (identical) issue as the edition of the first
5 volumes was too low and quickly sold out. – Stafleu
