Bonanni, F. Gabinetto armonico pieno d’istromenti
sonori indicati, e spiegati. Rom, Giorgio Placho
Westerhout after Stefano Sparigioni, 8 ff, 1 full-page
engraving with the 50th Psalm, 170 [of 177] pp, 1
unn. p. Errori. 151 numbered copper plates of musical
instruments, including 1 folded (plates 12/13
and 13/14 on one plate), 2 additional plates, 2 plates
at the end. Somewhat later half vellum with marbled
paper of the 18th century. € 7900,–
Priority Edition as earlier
print of the first edition with
the maximum of engraved
plates on stronger paper. Very
beautyfully and exceptionally
clean copy of this rare
and richly illustrated book
in early print version with
the plates on stronger paper.
– One of the most important
books concerning history of
music instruments, which describes
the instruments of the
collection of the “Collegio
Romano”, till today a relevant document. The beautiful
copper plates by A. von Westerhout reproduce the
common and exotic musical instruments, for which the
text part provides description and handling. – Eitner II,
Gafurius, F. Practica Musicae utriusqz cantus excellentis
franchini gaffori Laudensis. Quatuor libris
modulatissima. (Brescia, Bernardino Misinta 1502).
Quarto. 111 nn. ff, 1 blank f, 2 full-page woodcuts
stamp at end of text. Occasional light spotting.
Modern blind gilded leather in contemporary
One of the most wanted cimelia of music theory.
Extremely rare edition! Only this copy traceable for us
in antiquarian trade and auctions since 1914! As well
the first edition of 1496 not in trade since 1968 and the
second edition of 1497 only once in trade since 1926
(Baer). One of the most famous books on music theory.
It was first published in Milan in 1496 and five editions
appeared until 1512. – The extremely rare third edition
in a fine copy with wide margins. – “Practica Musicae”,
published in 4 books, is the last of Gafurius’ three major
works on music theory. “With great didactic skill, the
‘professor musicae’ summarizes the theoretical foundations
of the musical practice of the time in clear rules
and supplements them with detailed practice examples
and commentaries” (Ausst. Kat. Wolfenbüttel 1985, p.
92). – “The Practica is the most original part, because
in it Gafurius wants to make the student immediately
apply the rules in practice by simplifying the whole
theory of proportions, omitting the mode … and already
showing a strong sense of chord and tonality.
He already aims at the concept of vertical sound, at
the harmonic conception of music, for the lawful definition
of which Zarlino was to provide only 60 years
later” (MGG 4, 1242). – Gafurius was one of the most
important musical personalities of his time. – RISM
I, 342; coll. Hirsch 194; Cortot 82; not in Wolffheim.
Haydn, J. Die Schöpfung. Ein Oratorium … von
Joseph Haydn Doctor der Tonkunst … The Creation
An Oratorio … Vienna, 1800. Folio. Engraved
title, 4 ff. list of subscribers, 303 pp. Very clean copy
on stronger velin paper. Occasional helpful entries
for the conductor in blue crayon by old hand. Half
leather binding with contemporary marbled colored
paper. € 8500,–
A great milestone of oratorio literature – precious copy
with the signature of Haydn.
Very rare engraved first edition of the full-score in very
good condition of Haydn’s most important vocal work,
still published by himself and bearing his monogram
stamp in the lower right corner of the title page, which
was used by his printer to mark editions authorized
by Haydn. What makes this copy special, however, is
another monogram stamp, probably applied by Haydn
himself, and his additional signature in ink below it. The
list of subscribers, with 409 persons listed who ordered
507 copies, reflects Haydn’s fame throughout Europe
and reads like a “Who’s Who” of his time. Haydn
published the work himself: “’Die Schöpfung’ had the
good fortune to receive and the wish expressed in … the
‘Musikalische Zeitung’ that its publication should not
… be left to foreigners, have induced me to organize
it myself. The work shall therefore appear, nicely and
correctly engraved, printed on good paper, provided
with English text in addition to the German, in three or
at the most four months …” (J. Haydn on 15. 6. 1799 in
the Intelligenzblatt Nr. XV of the AMZ). Haydn was
also motivated to self-publish by the incredible perfor-
