usual), the binding can be attributed with certainty
to Selenka because of the unique style, the used tools
(found also on signed books) and the great technical
accomplishment. On title-page library-stamp “Prinz
von Braunschweig”. To be noted is also the duke’s
spectacular multicoloured armorial bookplate on upper
inside cover, see reproduction below.
It is the second book by J. F. Cooper (1789–1851) and
the first edition to be printed in Germany (first edition
in New York, 1821). Cooper broke new ground by
using The American Revolutionary War as setting. The
Spy is a drama of conflicting loyalties and interests in
which action mirrors more subtle internal psychological
tensions (Enc. Brit.). Cooper was the first American
to live from his writing and the first to incorporate
African-American and native Indian in his stories. The
novel was a great worldwide success. In perfect condition.

Contemporary dark-green morocco gilt,
bound for the first owner, Prince Luitpold of
Bavaria, Prince Regent of Bavaria from 1886
until his death in 1911 (bookplate): fat gilt fillet
round sides, inner panel framed by a gilt fillet,
at outer corners by arabesque ornament, at
inner corners by two flowers; spine raised on
four half bands, in first and third compartment
gilt-lettered, the others gilt to a romantic design;
edges of boards blind stamped; edges gilt.
First edition of the ‘Venetian Nights’. A
deluxe copy, not for commerce, printed on
strong velin paper in excellent condition. The
author Carl Wilhelm Vogt (Schloß Valley
1810–1874 Munich), probably working for
the Duke ‘in’ Bavaria, dedicated his romantic
poems to Maximilian, Duke in Bavaria
(1808–1888, father of Empress Elisabeth of
Austria, called Sisi). The interesting subscriber
list starts with the King of Prussia (Frederic
William IV, married to Elisabeth of Bavaria),
followed by Prince Luitpold, the first owner of this
item. Vogt’s poems were written in Venice where he
stayed for ten months. Further provenance: Konrad
Prince of Bavaria (1883–1969) married to the Italian
Princess Bona of Savoy-Genoa (armorial bookplate).

Original-Pergamentband mit goldgeprägtem Deckeltitel,
signiert von „Paul Kersten – Berlin“ auf hinterem
Innendeckel unten. In aufwendiger Leinen-Kassette.
Paul Kersten war neben Carl Sonntag Jun. der wichtigste
und einflussreichste deutsche Buchkünstler des
frühen 20. Jahrhunderts. Der Kunstschriftsteller Otto
Grautoff nannte ihn einen „Bahnbrecher eines neuen
Stils im Bucheinband“. Sein Schaffen beeinflusste maßgeblich
die nächste Buchbindergeneration, insbesondere
Otto Dorfner, den berühmtesten Schüler der von
ihm geleiteten Buchbinder-Fachschule des Lette-Vereins
in Berlin.
