Larson schreibt hierzu in Musique Fantastique: »The influence of Paul
Dessau, one of the collaborators on this score, seemed especially prevalent
in the use of modern dissonances and the like« (Larson 1985, 42;
Hervorhebung d. Autorin). Immer wieder wird auch CREATURE FROM THE
BLACK LAGOON (1954, M. Herman Stein, Hans J. Salter, Henri Mancini)
genannt:
As we have seen, the fantastic films of the 50’s retained
much of the musical styles of the decade that preceded.
But a great deal of experimentation took place, either in
complete scores such as FORBIDDEN PLANET and INVADERS
FROM MARS or in elements of other scores, such as the
unusually dissonant approach taken in scores such as
THE CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON (Larson 1985,
105; Hervorhebung d. Autorin).
Diese als »begrenzte Moderne« (»limited modernism«; Cooke 2008, 109)
bezeichnete filmmusikalische Erscheinung des »Golden Age« zeichne sich
wesentlich durch einen »relativ hohen Dissonanzgehalt« aus, der
gelegentlich in Zusammenhang mit verstörenden Themen erlaubt gewesen
sei (»in contexts where the disturbing nature of the subject-matter warranted
it«; Cooke 2008, 109).
