m A building-wide announcement is made <strong>for</strong> all building<br />

occupants to proceed to the designated safe room(s).<br />

m Assigned monitors secure all exterior doors <strong>and</strong> windows.<br />

m Assigned building engineering staff turn off all air h<strong>and</strong>ling<br />

units, ventilation fans, <strong>and</strong> window air conditioners as<br />

applicable (or security turns them off if a single switch<br />

capability has been installed).<br />

m <strong>Safe</strong> room doors are secured as soon as possible once all who<br />

are assigned to the safe room have entered.<br />

m Employees <strong>and</strong> visitors are accounted <strong>for</strong> by use of a roster <strong>and</strong><br />

visitor’s sign-in sheets.<br />

m Emergency in<strong>for</strong>mation is obtained by radio, TV, telephone, or<br />

cell phone in the safe room.<br />

m If the safe room has a carbon dioxide detector, monitor it if<br />

the time in the safe room exceeds 1 hour.<br />

m When the “all clear” determination is made, open the windows<br />

<strong>and</strong> doors, turn on ventilation systems, <strong>and</strong> go outside until<br />

the building has been fully aerated.<br />

3.5.3 operating procedures <strong>for</strong> a Class 1 <strong>Safe</strong><br />

Room<br />

Operating procedures <strong>for</strong> Class 1 (pressurized) <strong>Safe</strong> <strong>Rooms</strong> are<br />

similar to those of Classes 2 <strong>and</strong> 3.<br />

The system is turned on immediately upon receipt of a warning.<br />

Control panels <strong>for</strong> Class 1 systems typically include pressure<br />

gauges <strong>and</strong> status lights <strong>for</strong> automatic dampers, which provide<br />

assurance that the system is operating properly <strong>and</strong> a means of<br />

troubleshooting if the system does not pressurize.<br />
