Server configuration/integration
Configuration of a server
rack
The following points need to be considered
when selecting a suitable rack for the integration
of servers and other active components,
in order to guarantee an optimum
solution for the individual customer-specific
application.
Rack configuration
Rittal offers pre-configured server racks
which are tailored especially to the demands
of server integration:
● Vented doors for optimum server ventilation
● Roof plate for cable entry
● Quick-release side panels (optional in
some cases)
● 19″ attachment levels
● Levelling feet
● Castors (optional in some cases)
● Stabilisers (optional in some cases)
Rittal also offers a comprehensive range of
accessories which enable each customer to
configure an individual server rack.
Rack dimensions
The server depth is a particularly important
criterion for rack selection. The depths
900 mm, 1000 mm and 1200 mm have
proven particularly suitable for the installation
of most models. These depths not only
accommodate the server itself, but also provide
the necessary space for cable management
to the rear of the rack.
The rack dimensions (height x width x
depth) must also be matched to the available
floor space.

Servers are generally installed in the rack on
the front and rear 482.6 mm (19″) levels,
whereby L-shaped 482.6 mm (19″) mounting
angles or 482.6 mm (19″) mounting
frames are preferable for attachment purposes.
Cranked mounting angles are not
generally suitable for server installation.
The integrated U markings on the mounting
angles serve to facilitate installation within
the 482.6 mm (19″) level.
Cable management
Cable entry into a rack can be from below,
from above or from the sides. It is furthermore
important to bundle the cables in the
rack itself and to route them in such a way
that any heat build-up and the resultant
server failures can be reliably avoided. To
this end, Rittal offers an extensive range of
cable management products,
including:
● Roof and gland plates with cable routing
options
● Protected cable routing via cable ducts
in co-location racks
● Partitions with openings for cable entry
● Cable shunting rings, clamp rails, cable
management ducts etc.
Climate control
In order to avoid heat accumulation inside
the server rack, heat dissipation must be
ensured, and can be additionally assisted:
● Passive enclosure ventilation with slotted
front and rear doors to the server rack.
● Active enclosure ventilation – the Rittal fan
cross member provides for selective ventilation
of critical hot-spots in the server
rack. It is mounted directly on the slotted
server door.
● Climate management for the server rack
via CMC-TC to monitor temperature limit
values and to control fan and cooling units
to maintain as constant a temperature as
possible.
● High Performance Cooling Racks (HPC)
in conjunction with heavy-duty heat
exchangers for climate management in
the high-performance range.
Server integration
Most standard server models are supplied
with manufacturer-specific installation kits,
which are then generally attached to the
482.6 mm (19″) mounting angles at the front
and rear of the rack. Not all installation kits,
however, are depth-variable, and some
manufacturers offer housings which cannot
be mounted on the front and rear 482.6 mm
(19″) angles. The following Rittal products,
furthermore, can be used to enable mixed
configurations of different types in one rack:
● Universal server installation kit with mounting

● 19″ component shelves, 50 kg, 80 kg and
